There is also one heading south at Spalding, but taking the lines to March.
It does seem as though their main duties were on Annesley-Woodford coal trains before the mass influx of 9Fs, and also on Notts-March coal trains via the GN&GE Joint.
It seems that O1's did indeed pass through Grantham. Twilight of Steam shows O1 63768 passing through Great Ponton on a coal train from the Nottingham area sometime in the late 1950s/early 60s. It was a Colwick engine I presume so subsitituing for the normal O4 or WD??
I know have an excuse to buy what looks like being a fantastic loco!

I'm glad you found one. I had a look at the ones I saw and apart from one Colwick loco, the rest were Staveley GC in the period that I was likely to have seen them. I find this rather surprising for someone living in Lincolnshire at the time, unless I saw them at Nottingham Victoria and dont remember.

I shall defer to those who know much more than I do about livery detail. I can pick up no evidence of a signwritten number other than on the cabside, which appears to have three digits of which the first is almost certainly 8 (not ruling out 9 completely), the second is probably 7 and the third is indistinct. Whether that's because a number on the front is obscured by grime or because it isn't there, really I couldn't say.
In BLP's book of Keith Pirt's shots of Grantham there is a Grain Wagon outside Lee and Grinlings. It even mentions the wagon in the photo!
The photo is of A3 60066 Merry Hampton on an Up train to KX in June 1959.
I am a real fan of KP's photos. I am trying to build up my own collection of slides from the late 50s/early 60s and I have a few of Keith's. I will try and post some of them, although copyright is now with Book Law, I assume as long as I give them credit they wont mind; maybe after John's issues I should email them first?

May I very respectfully refer to the second topic in this section, titled 'PLEASE READ before posting'? I know little of the railway publishing business but I have heard that the proprietor of Book Law is more than usually protective over the copyright of Keith Pirt's work. Sorry if this sounds a little 'serious', but I wouldn't want the forum to get a bad name among the publishers. Perhaps best to get in touch first, as you suggest.

Back on page 46 I posted a photo taken by a former Grantham footplateman of No.62822, Grantham's last C1. I've just exchanged letters with him, and he's related to me the detail of a collision at New England which 'saw off' No.62810, Grantham's second-last large Atlantic. The account is from first hand experience because my contact was the fireman at the time! I intend to post the tale here once I've sought permission to do so but, meantime, I'm trying to find out what's officially 'on the record' about 62810's demise. Would someone who has access to the relevant volume of one of the locomotive class histories be kind enough to look this up and let me know? So far I've found a withdrawal date of 27/5/1949 on an internet database of locomotive information, but I'm wary of placing too much trust in such sources. All information will be gratefully received.
Yeadon vol.13 has 2810 wdn on 27/5/49 and into Doncaster on 1/6/49.
He hasn't got any renumbering to 62810 listed and as it came out of Plant ex-General overhaul on 13/10/47, it probably didn't get done. Interesting that collison damage hastened its end as it should have lasted at least 2 years ex-General before being withdrawn. It was also one of the last half dozen to get a General.
John i have a withdrawl date of 27/05/49 for 2810 and a cutting up date at Doncaster of 30/6/49. Had a quick trawl around usual sources, nothing has turned up yet. Im still looking.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

John,
There is no way I would post without permission of Book Law; which I know would probably not be forthcoming so dont worry!
Fine Ian - looks like I misunderstood. My copy of Grantham in the News 1951-1975 arrived yesterday (along with a copy of a hardback The Changing Face of Grantham which I also ordered). Do you have yours yet?
Many thanks to AndyW and 52D for the information about No.2810 . It fits well with the information I've been sent, which identifies the incident as having happened 'on a date, which I cannot recollect, in 1949'.

The Royal Mail have lost the book! Fortunately I was refunded my money by the supplier (ebay is good for that); so I now have to source it again!
