I hadn't realised it had been so long since I updated. I did have plans for the last few days of my holiday which were thrown awry by a severe migraine which wasted over a day.
I had moved the coaches on a bit, getting the lettering applied and the roofs further filled and smoothed.
I lettered up the horsebox at the same time, using Cambridge Custom Transfers.
Once you've opened the box, you have to finish, don't you? Although sharing a great many components ( a lot of the etch looks identical) this one was a great deal fiddlier than the D 4 to do. When I get it painted |I'll put it up against the Parkside for comparison.

Those NE coaches get better and better.
Migraines are no fun at all, I know. Touch wood, I've not had a serious one since my 'teens, but my wife still suffers the problem.

Well, you're all very kind. I don't get many real migraines these days, far fewer than I used to, but this was a nasty one. They're usually over in less than 24 hours, which is much less than some sufferers.
I seem to have missed this from the last update. I had quite a bit of paint left over after painting the coaches so I did a couple of CCTs while I was on. Now I didn't build this, it was in an Ebay job lot I bought a long time ago. None of them were quite finished and I've completed the odd one now and then since.
It's a D & S GC CCT. There is a thread on here where EdgeHill8A has done one and Bill very helpfully supplied the diagram number. I'm not sure whether the steps are correct but I don't want to strip the chassis back to alter them. I don't think this is the kit which the GCS have bought from Dan Pinnock.
Last night was mainly spent (apart from painting an ME 109 for No. 2 son) on the roofs of the coaches. I have scans of the Isinglass drawings but the scan had altered the size of them so I had to scale off to work out where the vents ought to go.
Does anyone know which compartments were non-smoking?
I also painted up a D86 General Van with the surplus paint but I don't know what the code above the number should be - anyone enlighten me?

What is the paint Jonathan? It looks a touch pale to me but it may just be the lighting.

I think the light has affected it a bit, Nick. It's Humbrol 186 with a spot of black, which is very close to the Precision colour.

A short update from a lot of work.... lining. I hate it and the modern Hornby coaches set a standard only the very gifted among us can equal. Done it has to be, though. I did the 3rd over the weekend and made such a complete cock of it that it's been completely repainted. It was useful practice, though and I think this is much better. The camera is merciless and some of the lines have pixellated slightly making it look worse than it is.
It's done with the fine tip of a Bob Moore pen. It's when you're sweating over this sort of thing and rubbing it off again for the dozenth time that you realise what a supreme talent the Larry Goddards and Ian Rathbones of this world really do have.
I do know I've missed a line and once it's dry I'll be making some judicious adjustments with a cocktail stick to tidy it up. The other side still needs the upper panels doing.

I'm always relieved to find that whilst I can see all of the flaws in the paintwork whilst I'm concentrating on trying to get it right, things look so much better once the item is on the layout, you've calmed down, and you are standing back looking at it in a more normal manner a couple of weeks sfter finishing the job! Take heart, experience must tell you that all will be well in the end......

Thank you Graeme, wise words and very much in line with my own thinking once I'd had a brew and looked at something else for a couple of hours. In any case I'm not one to give up once I've started so I spent a couple of evenings last week hunched over them doing it all again. Good practice as I have an A8 to line for Ormesby once these are done.
I glazed and added interiors this weekend as well so here they are as at this morning:
Thanks to JASd17 for his advice on smoking compartments. It remains a little speculative - please tell me if you have definite information before I put the lids on..... I now need to spend an evening painting passengers. The roofs will not be removable due to the amount of filling and profiling the ends will need so all this has to be done in advance.
I also received a parcel from ABS with some buffers so was able to just about finish off the two vans I detailed way back upthread:

Sorry to drag a very old part of the thread up but could I ask when you made the interior for this coach were the seats fabricated from flat or did you use a plastic moulding of some kind?jwealleans wrote:While I had the plastikard out I started to make up bits for the interior. Sorry for sticking my nose in, but would those seats by any chance be the originally-Ian Kirk, then Colin Ashby, and now (presumably) Mailcoach/Coopercraft "saw off to size" moulded plastic seating strips? They look just like the ones I've used in several coaches, and mine were of that "pedigree". I reckon I've seen them in slightly different styles and sizes too.
No doubt other suppliers offer something very similar so I won't be too surprised if I'm wrong

Thanks for the suggestions and information Gentlemen; I seem to remember that Parkside made the coach seating lengths back in my 3mm scale days... but I'll see about some Cooper Craft ones for my LNER corridors.
The Bill Bedford downloads will be just the thing for my Triang-Hornby non-corridor clerestory coaches.

Graeme's almost right - they are Coopercraft but not on a strip; they come cut to length for either corridor or non-corridor coaches. Items STSCOR or STSFWT here. They're my default seating option and have been for some time.
I think Southern Pride do the cut to length strips.
