Been doing some digging and found this on Mowbray's Brewery http://www.flickr.com/photos/seant_25/1251726639/.

Has anybody got any records or recollections of these outings?

I have seen them on nearby lines, and there was a processing factory in Peterborough but I wonder if they mostly went via the Joint line in order to keep them away from the two track section on the ECML.

Of course, it may have been that I was just never there at the right time of year.
Sorry John, you may well be right. It's just that I was trying to think of possible goods in Grantham yards.I thought local farmers may bring sugar beet to be transported to a sugar factory .I had Bardney in mind;did'nt know there was one near Peterboro'.Maybe it was'nt grown much around Grantham.I remember sugar beet being grown and a common sight
being taken up,being born near Langrick in the fens of Lincolnshire, not far from you I believe!
Regards,Roy.
There was another sugar beet factory in Spalding as well Roy, so they had quite a lot of choice. I always found the area around Grantham with more rolling countryside, to be more of a cattle region rather than the miles and miles of arable just to the east.

I was actually born in Bourne, but after a few years my parents moved 'north'. I have mixed memories of sugar beet, having spent days in vast fields "gapping" the plants during school summer holidays.

I suspect sugar beet did pass through Grantham on the various local pickup goods trains.

When i was a young lad i had a ride in the village farmers tipper lorry, a "Thames Trader" with a load of sugar beet to Kelham sugar factory outside Newark, I presume all their crop went to this factory only. A lot of sugar beet was grown in the surrounding area.

John's list of business's in Grantham (P50) was very much appreciated; but little history about the companies exists in the Internet. My visit to Grantham Library is imminent, so I hope this yields some information. Mowbray’s Brewery was taken over by Greens in 1952 and immediately closed; so that’s out of my era. The SixBells Junction website does not list a Mowbray’s staff outing by train, so I will need to visit the NRM as well to see what information they have about their train board shown in my post at the top of this page.

I hope that a bit more study will yield variation in traffic, and a visit to the library will yield additional info on the freight yard, and facilities.

I don’t recall seeing Grain wagons on photos of Grantham, so I will need to trawl those; but Grain merchants and mills were still operational in the late 1950s and some Vent vans have labels that could be foodstuffs.

I love this bit of modelling; not only is it interesting but also reflects life at the time!

While browsing some brewery history sites, I found that Mowbray's Brewery in Grantham was run by Flowers between 1959 and 1964, but I cant find where I saw it now :( .

I've copied this from Page 21 of the Topic (go there for the larger version). It shows two cranes in the yard, a mobile one sat on a lowmac wagon (Cowan) and another in the background which I assume is the yard crane for loading/unloading freight from wagons. Does anybody know whether this was mounted on the ground or the freight platforms in the yard?

Still not seen any grain wagons......

There is something in the 5-plank wagons behind the crane on the lowmac. I wonder if it could be house bricks from the brickworks south and east of Peterborough?

Flowers had a Brewery Place on the corner of Welby Street and Wide Westgate in the late 50's as I remember going there as a young boy with my Father and Grandfather for them to see one of my cousins Grandfather. Therefore a link between Mowbrays & Flowers seems very logical. My Grandfather lived in a small terraced cottage right next door to Mowbrays wharehouse in (Wait for It) Brewery Hill.I nearly lost my life as a young boy when the Chimney collapsed from off of the Wharehouse and came through the roof of the cottage landing across the bed I was in,but missing me. I know the Devil looks after his own, before anyone else says it.

Well that just goes to show you that the Internet is wrong; I got the bit about Mowbray's of a historical brewery site too! I've seen stuff about a new brewery opening somewhere based on the Mowbray's one; all a bit confusing so I will look again to see what I can find. Good job the chimney missed it would have smarted a bit!

Further research reveals that Mowbray's merged with Flowers in 1954, became part of Whitbread in 1962 and was then closed in 1967!

Not sure whether Whitbread or Flowers may have archuves from the brewery! Brewery Hill is pretty close to the station so maybe stuff was brought in by rail until road haulage became more prevalent...

I can't do that officially unless I am the copyright owner, but I have left a sharp comment on that photo's page.

Many thanks for your support and your comment added on the flickr site. I will take this up with flickr (once I've found out how one does this) and let you know how I get on. There are two other photos involved too. However, I'm not going to lose sleep over this kind of thing - life's too short. I realise the risk I'm running but, as I've mentioned before, the interest, enjoyment and informed comment generated by sharing the pictures here - which money couldn't buy - make this little more than an irritation. Nevertheless I'll follow it up forcefully because the folk who do this should know that they are being watched. I'll be grateful, contributors, if you let me know if you spot any more.

Thanks again.
