1st- 0-6-0T G.W.R. Pannier tanks especially the 57XX series
2nd- 0-6-0T L.M.S. 'Jinty'
3rd- B.R. Standard class 4 2-6-4MT

Personally I reckon it'd be:

1. Fowler 3F 0-6-0T

2. BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T

3. Gresley J50 0-6-0T

The Thompson Q1 rebuild, North Eastern 4-8-0 and 4-6-2Ts would be shortly after these top 3. Oh, and the Aspinall 2F saddle tanks, the Fowler 2-6-4T, the V1/V3s.

For looks, I'd put the Thompson L1s in there but lets not start that all over again!

Im with Rlangham although very much biased towards other ex NER tank engines as well especially the BTP, G5 and J77. Not a lot of people outside NER enthusiasts realise that the E class/J72 were formed from several different rebuilds as well as new builds and that the rebuilt BTPs formed the basis of the J77s.

The most impressive has got to be the U1 (Yes, it is a tankie, but maybe not as you know it).

I don't really go on the technical details of a locomotive i.e. technical data such as coal consumption and tractive effort and so on and so forth i usually go on what a locomotive looks like therefore i like the -

I'd say the engine best suited to its job.

Hence my suggestions of Jinty, BR 4MTT and J50.

I have a soft spot for the Hill Y4s, which to me looked older than they actually were. One was based at Stratford Works and was the first Departmental I had ever seen, before I even knew there were such things. What an amazing place Stratford was in steam days! Nowhere else in the country could boast such a tangle of running lines, running sheds and works.

Of locos I never saw, I reckon some of the Baltics would have been pretty impressive, maybe at a station I never visited - St Enoch. Anyone for the GSW?
