FLYING SCOTSMAN EXHIBITION TRAIN

Hi there,

I am writing a book about the locomotive FLYING SCOTSMAN. As you will be aware it visited North America with an exhibition train. I am very interested in the baggage cars used with this train - RECEPTION CAR - Nº E 104 E, EXHIBITION CAR A - Nº E 70636 E, EXHIBITION CAR B - Nº E 70632 E, EXHIBITION CAR C - Nº E 70758 E, EXHIBITION CAR D - Nº E 70497 E. I was very interested to read your item on the diagram 245 coaches - the final two cars on the train. However, I am purplexed as I thought 70497 was built to diagram 245, but it doesn't appear in your summary at the end. can you clarify please. Also do you have any info on the Thomson designed coaches as used in the train? Finally do you have any info on the disposal of the cars that were converted to dinning cars and that were used at Victoria Station Restaurant at Universal Studios, California. Many thanks.

OK. The reason that 70497 does not appear in the summary of the relevant Carriage Information Sheet is that it was a steel-panelled van originally to Dia. 315 and subsequently reclassified Dia. 245. You will see a note of this in the middle column of the text beneath the official diagram.

Since these Carriage Information Sheets were produced to complement the Hornby 4mm scale models, and the Brake Van they produce is of the teak-panelled type, these other vans are not included.

70497 was originally built to Dia. 315 in 1940 and numbered 4275. It was renumbered as 70497 in 1948 and condemned in 1968.

As to the Thompson carriages, can you provide any more details as to type(s) please? The converted stock will take some further investigation, as it will probably not appear as such in the official records.
