Hi all, just a quick note to say that I have changed my username from Dr Phibes to Dick Turpin so it matched the one on RMweb. As well as being more in keeping with the forum, it's one of my favourite A3 names - a regular performer around here in the North East.

My big project this year is going to be getting the garage rebuilt and deciding how best to accommodate a decent layout, either highish in the main space or located in the roof, all specially insulated and purpose built. I’ve plenty to think of here. The space is about 4 metres by 6, and may come out at about 4 or 5 metres tall. It's all a bit flexible at the moment. Cheers.

Hi Manna,

I am planning a mezzanine, for storage if nothing else. I am thinking that if I can gain enough roof height (without upsetting any neighbours), there maybe enough room for a decent layout, and it would be nicely out of the way. The problem is that the sloping sides of the apex begin to limit the area available just as they do in a loft if you want a decent baseboard height. It all seems great until you start making sketches!

The problem with garages as such is that they have to remain appealing to potential buyers for traditional purposes when you come to sell the property, otherwise I could leave off the front doors altogether and just call it the railway room. Still, there should be enough room for two cars which should make it appealing enough when that time comes, or one car and a decent workshop space.

I am also thinking that I could always build two layouts, one more detailed and smaller in the mezzanine, and one larger one like a large continuous run simply for playing trains, located high enough for the safety of the stock and scenery. I do have four boys, aged 3, 6, 9 & 12, some of whom would be keen to help with this, and one has already suggested the we run it out from the garage and around the lawn (complete with pond and model of the Forth bridge running over it but that's kids for you) but the wife gave me a funny look when this was said, and I'm not all that keen on garden railways in any case.

The only other hurdle is going to finding enough time to get cracking on the layout once its up. I'm really looking forward to being able to do a bit and then leave it without having to pack away all the time. Cheers.

Hi Blink Bonny,

Yes Indeed. More familiar to me as 2579 from the apple green period, but a name is a name and the pedigree the same. My other long term favourites have always been Sunstar, Night Hawk & Robert the Devil. I don't know, there's something that that just gets you about a name.

Indeed there is, although the reason I chose BB is because when it asked for a sign-in, I went blank. However, there on top of the telly was my newly purchased model of....

....Blink Bonny. The only BR-owned A3 to have visited Huddersfield shed and worked past Mirfield..

Lucky you didn't have a model of 60835 up there, then.

As for me, if only I'd added 10 to the number, my name would have been 25% shorter. But at least my choice was a local engine for me.

But for resonant (LNER) names, 62678 or 62691 take some beating, imo.

I was thinking of the number of letters...

It was only a casual comment rather than a serious enquiry, but I'd guess the LMS Princess Coronation class must have some of the longest names (as well as boilers).

37 517 named St Aidans CE Memorial School, Hartlepool, Railsafe Trophy Winners 1995

St Aidans was in larger than usual letters, the rest considerably smaller.

Must be beaten?!?!
