North Eastern Railway Bramhope Tunnel Photo 1918

Post by Rlangham »

Image

Nice colour postcard in my collection (the funny markings across the whole image are a result of resizing it, the postcard itself is higher quality) showing Bramhope Tunnel. The postcard was posted in 1918, and from what I can read on the back, says;

Dear John, this puffer is just leaving the tunnel where it is so dark & they did not give us any light. Love & kisses to both xxxxxxxxxxx

Auntie Nell

The postal address is to a Master J Bowyer, the address is fairly undecipherable but Master Bowyer appears to be living on a farm in Bracknell, Berkshire

G'Day Gents

Nice card and a nice wet tunnel, In the early 1900's they made postcards of everything, even obscure parks in Slough, strange but delightful.

I'm sure I have a postcard of 'Highgate Station'

Ay up!

Very nice indeed. I wonder if an R1 (D21 to the LNER types!) ever worked the line?

I have seen for sale a postcard of a concrete bench in front of the bleakest most windswept stretch of "beach" you've ever seen in yer life taken on a grey, miserable looking day.

Some people'll buy owt!
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!

I can confirm that that tunnel is indeed wet.
365 days a year and no matter what the weather has been doing for months the waterfalls inside are constant.
And the drains in the 6ft run full bore all the time. You can hear the rocks being rolled along in them.

G'day Gents

Worked through there on a DMU after some track work (around 1990) 10mph, seemed to take forever to get through, I stuck my head out with my Bardic lamp to see what they'd done, got drowned, it was pouring down, outside it was the middle of summer and a nice sunny day, it also had very noisy track.
