Station Building

Hi guys,

Having become frustrated trying to get the valve gear and motion working on my B17, I've turned my attention to producing my first building for my planned layout. While far from complete (there are to sub buildings to add at each end as well as the roof and final details!), I thought I'd post some pictures and get some feed back. There are extra points if you can guess the station it is based on!

It looks excellent. No idea where it is though. What materials have you used?

Hi Alan,

The building is built up out of card with the brickwork, detail etc printed on using an old pre CAD sketch programe. Strength is provided by poster board and the roof is a mixture of plastic and card tiles. Glazing was done using clear plastic card and the frames were drawn in using a touch up pen from Halfords (with slightly mixed results).

I've still got to do the outer buildings and each end and then to adjacent buildings on platform two (including the engine shed!). Even in N gauge the structure is going to be huge and I will have to really cut the track plan down to fit everything in.

As a bit of a clue as to the location it is North of Hatfield but South of Peterbourgh.

Hi Steve,

If your're modelling an engine shed, my guess would be Hitchen. I don't have a clear photo of the building, but I think that could be it.

You're right Alan - the building is based on Hitchin. It won't be a 100% accurate model but I plan on getting all the major bits right. However, I've only got 8ft or so to play with and even in N gauge that's going to be asking a lot...

Steve, I'm thinking of modelling the northern approaches to Sandy. Do you know if any of the quar-arts ever went north of Hitchen? I know they did for excursions but was wondering if they were used on other stopping trains on the main-line.

Alan, I have no idea if the Quad ever got beyond Hitchin on the stopping trains. However I seem to remember seeing a picture of a test train for Cock 'o the North at Kings Cross made up of random passenger stock, including a quad set - I'll see if I can find it again...

At any rate, do what I'm planning to do - it's only a model if you want to run something make up an excuse to run it!

Thanks for the kind words re my locos elsewhere-may I return the compliment here!These are most impressive -how are you sourcing plans,drawings etc for your buildings?and CAD-does this mean you are actually producing your own brickpapers etc?Essentially printing your own kits?!

Thanks for the compliment. My plans are being taken from photos of Hitchin and 'best guessing' the scale. To be honest I think the station is a little short, but this helps with the space issues.

My artwork is done using Autosketch, which is of early 1990's vintage with everything being printed onto card stock.
