Charles John Cutcliffe Wright Hyne is reputed to have had the idea that led to the LNER introducing Camping Coaches. Can anybody tell me please who was his influential contact within the LNER?
Is it significant, I wonder, that Cutcliffe Hyne lived in the West Riding of Yorkshire and that the Camping Coaches were initially allocated to the NE Area? Or is this just a coincidence, and the scheme was an HQ initiative that just happened to be given to the NE Area to put into practice?
Regards,
John.

Re: Cutcliffe Hyne / Camping Coaches
The article by Carter and Maclean in British Railway Journal 23 will answer almost all questions save for the name of the individual (if any) to whom C J Cutliffe-Hind (as quoted therein) put his suggestion, and naming that part of the vast LNER organisation responsible for the Camping Coaches.
There may be more insights in the LNER Magazine - I shall look when I have more time.

Re: Cutcliffe Hyne / Camping Coaches
The article by Carter and MacLean is indeed excellent - but as you say, it does not answer the critical questions.
The LNER Magazine ('Camping Coaches', September 1933, page 483) gives no clue either.

John.

Re: Cutcliffe Hyne / Camping Coaches
In an earlier issue it was Cecil Dandridge's little empire that issued the publicity and booking material - see Advertising Notes on p.364, July 1933.

Many thanks for the tip - I'll have a look next time I am in the NRM.
