Thanks for that.
I was going to say that the link given does not work for me.
Is it because it is a Facebook link and I don't do it?

Re: Redcar /Lackenby locos
They may seem to be 'big' for steelworks, but they will have to handle two or, occasionally, three, full torpedoes (2@704tons = 1408 tons or 3@704tons = 2112tons behind the drawbar) over a 4 1/2 mile run which includes stretches of 1:200 and some curved track. Reliability and reduced journey times are also most important.mr B wrote:went past Lackenby today and the recent (wont say new) locos are on display , any way they are big - for steelworks , just think of a centre cab Clayton , and the simlar size,

The decision to go for larger locos was not taken lightly.

a question aside how long do you have before the molten metal begins to solidify, and how do you put a loaded torpedo back on the track ????????
Re: Redcar /Lackenby locos
Must be quite a while, remember they used to run from Lackenby to Consett.

Morning All
believe that the torpedos ran from the Cargo Fleet Works to Consett, and not Lackenby. Believe that Lackenby received steel ingots, etc, which were duly changed to steel beams, plates etc. Whilst works such as Cleveland & Cargo Fleet had the blast furmaces which produced the iron & steel in their basic forms.

Re: Redcar /Lackenby locos
I will seek further information as to the time, but a lot depends on the state of the torpedo lining (eg new lining, and thick, or old lining, and thin). Re-railing is generally done by jacking and packing, with the use of remote-controlled jacks. In extreme cases the use of cranes is necessary.third-rail wrote:a question aside how long do you have before the molten metal begins to solidify, and how do you put a loaded torpedo back on the track ????????

Re: Redcar /Lackenby locos
The Cargo Fleet traffic was relatively short-lived, being used as a means of keeping the Consett steel plant in production while other plant problems were being resolved. The torpedoes used were smaller than those currently in use at Redcar / Lackenby, and complied with the then current BR loading gauge. Lackenby had an open-hearth steel-making plant, served by - amongst others - Barclay fireless locos. The blast furnaces produced a form of cast iron which had to be further processed into steel - either as ingots, or as and when the plant re-starts - continuously cast slabGreedy Boards wrote:Morning All

Re: Redcar /Lackenby locos
thinking back some years, didnt one of the torpedo's come off some where and closed the main line , this led to them being used for internal use only , now was there also talk of Lacenby-Port Talbot torpedo traffic 70's-80's ?

No, the locos are of German origin, by Siemens, but last worked in Norway prior to moving to Redcarseacoaler wrote:One of the new locos last Sunday in its lair , beneath the Redcar blast furnace. Are these locos actually made in Norway ?

Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
Re: Redcar /Lackenby locos
That would be interesting , wonder if there are any pics of them being unloaded at Tees Dock ?
