Re: LNER A4 liveries
Graham in 1946 the LNER carried out a major renumbering to put all locomotives including the A4s in an easily recognisable sequence, prior to this some were also renamed from traditional bird names to names reflecting the then current directors of the LNER. The valances were indeed removed to aid maintenance under wartime conditions.
There are plenty of people on this site who can give chapter and verse on the liveries carried. I myself am amazed at the variety and also the number of changes between locos.
I would suggest careful research and asking questions if unsure.

Re: LNER A4 liveries
It's probably fair for me to say that considerable changes have been made to the A4's.
Here's an example of Silver Link; Compared to the old version; Please click on the links, as they don't show up too well on this page.

Ay up!
You've nearly got the shape at the front end right with them! Well done.
Until I saw a picture of the press run of the Silver Jubilee, I never "got" the Streamliners. I do now!

Thanks BB , I think the cab area still need a lot of work though and the trailing axle on the leading bogie might need to edge forward a bit too.

Re: LNER A4 liveries
Many thanks 52D - as you suggesr; 'asking a question'. So, would there have been any A4s running PRE WW2 WITHOUT valances?
My 'pedantry' is that I have an A4 model (Golden Plover in BR green livery with early crest) without valances but as I want to be as accurate as possible to LNER livery, names and numbers etc, (ie pre Nationalisation) I would rather sell this model and get another A4 WITH valances to repaint, number etc.
Also, in what year did the double chimneys start to appear? Was this a post war improvement or were some fitted before the war?
And finally, were any pre-war A4s painted in any of the GREENS used by LNER and if so could you name and number some examples for me (and again, would they have had valances, single chimneys - and what type of tender?
Many thanks in anticipation.

Re: LNER A4 liveries
None of the A4s ran pre-war without valences.
Double chimneys were fitted new in 1938 to garter blue A4s 4468 Mallard, 4901 Capercaillie, Seagull and Peregrine. Others did not receive them until 1957 onwards.
Apple green A4s were 4482, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 93, 4, 5 though the front end treatment differed. All the apple green A4s had valences and single chimneys and corridor tenders. The livery did not last long before garter blue was standardised.
I suggest you try to get hold or sight of RCTS Locomotives of the LNER Part 2A which gives all this information and much, much more.

I'm going to do what I did last time a question like this was asked, and recommend reading this webpage for details of A4 liveries, name changes etc:

Re: LNER A4 liveries
Hi all,
I have a project part finished, which is to repaint 8 of A4 models with the various paint schemes used in their lifetime.
I have chosen No. 4487 Sea Eagle (or 60028 Walter K Wigham in BR days), as this is one of the few A4s to have undergone repainting in the 8 different paint schemes. (This does not include the early grey/silver paint applied only to the Silver.... series of A4s.)
I am partial to models made of metal, so I have chosen Hornby Dublo 3 rail as the basis for my project.
So far, I have two pre-war machines in green and garter blue with valances (both look magnificent), and two-post war machines in blue lined white, and BR green.
To be honest I am not sure that I will get around to doing the wartime black, but at some time I hope to have the post-war garter blue No. 28, and the early nationalisation purple scheme.
As a reference, I have used a book published in 2005 by Ian Allen entitled Locomotives in Detail - Gresley 4-6-2 A4 Class. It has a comprehensive coverage of tenders, equipment, liveries and name changes, and dates thereof.
I am surprised and delighted that so much old Hornby Dublo stuf is around, and still runs "out of the box" so to speak. I admit, it does not run as finely as the modern stuff, but I understand and appreciate the difference.
regards
kimball

Re: LNER A4 liveries
Shaded letters and numbers will have to be a sacrifice I'm afraid. I'm rather limited with MS paint.
I'll change the nameplate to the usual black backed version.
When you say full LNER, do you mean all four letters on the tender, as opposed to just NE?

Re: LNER A4 liveries
I've also just fixed something else which I kept forgetting about, which is the dip in the cab roof. That has now been added and the tender has been lowered along the top.
These current changes are on 60009, and will be added to 4498 and 2509 in due course.
Other locos to be done to complete the liveries list will be:
Woodcock in photographic grey
Silver Link with nameplates and no parabolic curve
Kingfisher in Br blue
Dominion of Canada in coronation Livery
Mallard in Garter blue
Merlin in experimental purple
and an apple green A4
