Interesting that china clay was unloaded at Beverley, because in the early 80s it was unloaded (bagged) in Hull for Ideal Standard.

During the same period "whiting" (really chrushed chalk) from the quarry just to the west of Beverley was sent to Aberdeen for the paper industry. There was a fleet of dual braked former "ferry" open wagons, a mid - length (longer than a standard VB 4 wheel wagon, but shorter than a modern AB wagon) and 7 planks high.
They were a significant part of the Bridlington trip and the Hull - Aberdeen Speedlink service.

ts the first time I have seen a photo taken from this location (Flemingate crossing?)
It was taken from the footbridge that crossed the line from Chantry Lane to Friar(?) Lane, I am almost certain that Beverlonian who took the D49 photo was with me at the time.

I was interested in the comment by Cambois about china clay being unloaded in bags for Ideal Standard - are you sure? Ideal Standard used an enormous amount of clay ( I worked for IS for over 20 years) , it would have been a hell of a job handling all those bags. In my days there were road tankers delivering the dry clay, several a week.

In my youth, I always looked out when passing Ideal Standard for their works shunter, a green liveried Peckett 0-4-0ST. I enquired about its fate and was told that it was broken up on site and melted down to make boilers, radiators & valves. In those days, the company included both Ideal Boilers and Radiators and the sanitary ware works. It was split up in the late '60s.

The date was 1982/3 and the loads were occasional AB vans of bagged clay that was palletised in the Hull freight depot and then delivered by road. The PS connection into the works had long since gone. I cannot recollect were it came from, but perhaps it was a more specialist clay than the bulk delivery.

Well that is my memory, but it was something teased out by this thread

Thanks for that (sad) little snippet Solario, in fact thanks for your initial postings and also to the other contributors to this thread. As a Hull lad and a relatively new member here, it's been a very worthwhile trip outside of the modelling area :D

FWIW the reputation of the twice daily 'York parcels' for producing interesting locos continued into the '70s - two of the earliest locos I ever spotted in 1968 were Midland Lines 'Peaks' D49 and D50, and on the odd occasions the evening train had a Dairycoates 37, we were not happy

I would recommend back issues of The railway Observer (available from the Vintage Carriage Trust at Ingrow on the KWVR). Some issues date from the late 30s but they have a good supply of post early 50s ones. They contain many regional logs of unusual movements and inter-regional workings.
