Here's what gave me a really "cross head" , even to the point of mentioning the hollihocks!
Image

I had a much fairer wind after finishing "real" work early today, save for the moment when my (trying to be clever) "final touch" of the soldering iron soldered up solid one expansion link and radius rod, which took some sorting out. At last however I'm so close to the final result that I can taste it. I know the brake rigging needs to be reversed, and I haven't fiited the oil boxes one side, nor the lamp irons / coupling hook / brake gear / cylinder drains / reversing rod (no point when it all has to conme apart again to recover the "masters" for mould making). Also the motion bracket would be better with a thin, more truly A1/1 style overlay (although once it is painted black who notices from 18"+?).

Here's what I have, thus far:

STA77314 fireman's side with valvegear.jpg

It runs and pulls as the original Hornby loco did, and goes round my 3 foot radii without complaint.

Looking at the A1/1 now, and it looks truly wonderful, there doesn't really seem to be much paintwork to do. OK the smokebox joint needs blending in but otherwise it's mostly running plate and smoke deflectors.

Obviously a different matter if you were turning it out in blue livery but there can't be many major conversion projects where there's so little painting involved. That's very appealing for those who can build a nice model but for whom painting and lining is a real problem.

Very nice

How did you mend the crosshead ? I have some spare if you need one .

Tender needs disc wheels unless BR changed to spoked wheels.

Might have to consider a LNER green version to go with the GER Blue one

2002: 'twas partly that aspect of it that persuaded me to do the job. A conversion involving no tricky painting may be "The Land of Milk & Honey" to some. Time will tell.

Made a new crosshead Mick, using two folded thicknesses of n/s and a shipload of time, filing, drilling and bending! Would never have bothered with such a struggle but I was trying to reach a stage at which I had something to show, before this weekend.

Pursuing the line of avoiding tricky paintwork, would the NRM Scotsman R2441 with 107 boiler work as a basis for an apple green version. I think there's something different about the boiler bands?

PS: I've also bought a Sandwich (not the edible variety). Those nice Hereford Model Centre people split a Talisman set for me at the Warley Show!

Ah, so you're the one and only "viewer" Terry Wogan always used to refer to who watches the Eurovision Song Contest each year!

I hear that! Just nursing a hangover my end...

The more I look at your GN Graeme, the more I am convinced something in the boiler/running plate relationship of the PDK effort is wrong.

Been on the tiple Simon ;)

Please can we not go on about the inaccuracies of the PDK model........I'll end up wanting a GK A1/1

saying that....I couldn't depart with her....Tim Easter's paint job makes up for every inaccuracy on that loco! She's a beaut! :P

I was evidently struggling to do do things properly long before "hangover time", as whilst relaxing with a beer or two last night I typed up a further post to go on here. No trace of it to be found today, so I presume I never actually submitted it.......

Now I'm not ignoring other comments, for all of which I am grateful, but in respect of:

I think the snag here is the position of the cladding band at the junction of the coned part of the barrel and the smokebox, unless I've not considered other important differences too. I believe that boiler band would have to be moved to sit about a foot further forwards (as on Sandwich) since I think it was placed in the "older" position on Scotsamn's 107 boiler to make it look like one of the diag 94 variants. I'm not sure if there was also a knock-on change to the position of the next band on the cone so as to to keep spacings looking even. Applying the new bands and lining them would be only a minor problem, but removing the old ones completely and restoring the green paintwork in their place would be a bit of a pain. Mick B for instance has found different results to mine when trying to find a matching shade to the Hornby LNER green, so maybe it varies from model to model?
