6229 casing

6229 casing
I've heard from a friend that 6229's streamlined casing has a rather large dent just forward of the cab area that's only visible from the footbridge. Does anyone know what happened?

hi gents
rumour had it when they brought the locomotive out of locomotion they miss judged placing of the door way in the museum and it slipped onto the top of the engine luckily as it is on the top of the engine its quite difficult to notice it unless u look for it

but im sure 6229 was at locomotion for an lms weekend which featured the engine with a carriage from the era that ran with 6229, i know scots guardsman was at locomotion as was princess elizabeth and im sure the duchess turned up as well

The casing is kept up by a framing that goes over the boiler, with some framing at the front. It doesn't go right along the boiler, rather along the firebox sides mainly. There is still some space between the firebox sides and the casing.
I've seen a photo of them being built at Crewe Works. Anyone want the link?
While fixing the dent, why not overhaul it so it can be back in steam?

In the mid 1960s (when I were but a lad) I went to Barry. I actually walked along the top of West Country 34105 SWANAGE and it was surprising how thin and flimsy the casing was.
No doubt an A4 would be the same as the Duchess and West Country

It's plenty sturdy, but it is not like the A4, where more of the casing goes right around the boiler, as opposed to being kept up by a "exoskeleton". 60008 had a few panels of the casing left open, and you could see the boiler underneath.blackout60800 wrote:It dosen't look very sturdy at all
