Re: nymr train crash
This statement has been posted on several other forums:
INCIDENT AT GROSMONT – Tuesday 15 November 2011
While attaching a locomotive to a train at Grosmont Station, the coaches ran away into a siding demolishing the buffer stop, and coming to rest having struck the parapet of an adjoining bridge on Network Rail’s Esk Valley Line. The end coach was partially derailed angled towards the Esk Valley Line. There were no staff injuries. NYMR were not running public services on this day with the train movement concerned being for internal purposes.
Unfortunately the end vehicle (Gresley Brake Third Open No 43567) has suffered significant damage, although the full extent will only be known once the coach has been recovered and examined. Although not actually foul of their running line, because of uncertainty about any possible impact on the bridge, and fears about vibration disturbing the derailed coach, Network Rail suspended the passage of trains past the site.
Recovery work was managed by DBS on behalf of Network Rail using their breakdown crane from Knottingley. Because of the difficult site location access has to be from the Esk Valley running line. NYMR participated in the recovery, which was completed late afternoon on 16th November 2011.
NYMR very much regret the incident, and the affect it had on both Northern Rail train services and Network Rail infrastructure. We especially extend our apologies for the inconvenience to Northern’s passengers. NYMR will, of course, be carrying out a full investigation, with enquiries focused on the derailed coach. Early indications suggest the incident was not due to an error on the part of any staff engaged in the train movement who acted in an exemplary manner.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch and Office of Rail Regulation have been advised.

Re: nymr train crash
It has been reported on other forums that the BTO is a write off, this is not the case. The body is ok, the underframe is damaged but looks to be repairable at this stage, the LNERCA has already located the parts required. An unfortunate incident but not a disaster!

Ay up!
If the "strings" were pulled then this destroys all vacuum in the system for shunting purposes. Also, it may be that the stock had been there for some time. If all the vac leaks from the system, then they'd act like unbraked vehicles until a vac had been created.

Please can we avoid any speculation and wait for the report.
The RAIB have been called in as has been stated previously.
So can we wait for an official verdict.

We in LNERCA are being quite laid back about this and would ask everybody else to be too. 56856 is ok and 43567 will be repaired. The damage to the body is restricted to scratches from trees. We don't want to comment further until after the inquiry and the coach is recovered to Pickering and can be lifted for proper assessment.

Re: nymr train crash
I agree with you Bryan, and I've been waiting for Sawdust or Wavey to comment for LNERCA as to what is happening..thank you Sawdust..after spending hours working on that carriage I feel better now.
Re: nymr train crash
Heres hoping that the damage to the frame is minimal and you can get her fixed easily. At least its not like the damage that class 31 sustained (drooping nose) at Pontypool the other day....sawdust wrote:Well said Bryan!Bryan wrote:Please can we avoid any speculation and wait for the report.

no handbrake will stop a coach or two if hit with enough force from sliding

Sorry, mr b - no offence meant. The explanation was intedned for those who maybe don't.
I reckon the brake handwheel should have been well screwed down and wheel chocks applied. However, familiarity and all that. But I also agree, wait for the RAIB report,

Re: nymr train crash
also of note it has a vacuum brake , now if yer old enough think on a Ford windscreen wiper, no vac it dont work, same as the train loss of vacuum the wheels wont revolve, in its day Nigel had all his stock so fitted.

Re: nymr train crash
A report of this incident in the York Press said that there were "cleaners on the train but they got off". I don't know about RPS'es but on the national rail network attempting to shunt a train with cleaners on board would be a major safety breach since they would be required to have "STOP" boards applied when cleaners were on board.
