Thanks Mick, oh the shelf...it's quite safe I can assure you, it's braced to the wall, and to the beams above, and to be honest it only has a handful of locos held on there now...where as for two years it had an entire fleet!

As regards your water tower, do you have the book 'Servicing the North Eastern Railway's Locomotives', as there is a plan on page 19 of the water tower at York, 1910, it may be of some help.

Many thanks for that, I haven't got that book, will have to get hold of it...I'm guessing it's the same water tower seen in the 50s....large round shap...looks like something out of Thunderbirds

Afternoon all!


Miserable day here, thick fog has engulfed the dales, so I decided to head into the garage and do a touch of work on the layout.


The Carriage Sidings, which are really just a part of the backdrop to the layout, are not going to be powered. So I though I might as well work on getting these lines fixed in place. They pretty much run the full length of the layout, so we are talking 14ft of track for each line. I tried using the super glue method for these, but I realized it was going to be far easier on these two lines to use pins...they are always going to have coaches on them, so it seemed somewhat easier, especially them being the furthest away lines to deal with.

Sorry....honestly can't see any lean. You have to remember the perspective the photograph is taken at.

But for me, I can't see any lean I'm afraid.

Your probably right, but even taking the perspective of the photo into account, it dosen't look quite level to me

Tom, its a pity you've laid them sidings. During my N Gauge days, I always glued track down with Resin W glue. This stayed put when the chippings were added and was easier than nailing down that narrow track.

However, good on yer - it looks well.

The only time that water tower leaned was when they blew it up...

The Army was called in to blow up one of the cooling towers at Thornhill Power Station except they got it wrong. There were no splitting charges up the side and every leg had a charge strapped to it. The result? It leapt 6 inches or so off the ground, then sat down again. Intact, apart from the legs.

Final demolition, bit by bit, took over a year....

Funny when they blew up the concrete coaling tower at York they managed to make it leant over..it too had to be demolished by hand, and that took about a year I think. Should have got Blaster Bates to do it. I remember watching it from the office roof, spectacular. Does anyone have a pic of the tower after the attempted demolition, I would love to see one.
