discovered my book is a david and charles reprint of tomlinson, which includes details of some of the earlier locos, including jenny lind,
but not sadly something like this.

Re: Another Mystery Loco.
The recent (2006) IRS book on County Durham lists No 11 of the Londonderry Railway as an IC 0-6-0, made by RS (w/n 1326), one of a pair delivered in 1860, going to the NER in 1900, allocated NER no 2272 and being withdrawn in 1902.
I'm way out of my area here but this seems to be a contender.

Yes that could be a contender, the crown device still is a mystery, I have seen pictures of other Londonderry locos but without the crown. It could of course have been on royal train duties!!

Re: Another Mystery Loco.
Originally the coronet is the ducal symbol for Lord Londonderry who placed it on his locos. Andy W has confirmed what is written in Hoole's Locos of the NER appendix 2 regarding the loco. I missed the footnote when reading through it.
