Re: Tom's Layout and Work Bench

Evening all :)

Latest locomotive out of the works. Peppercorn A1 60121 'Silurian' Long term resident of 50A, therefore a perfect candidate for the new layout, Leaman Road...my take on York Motive Power Depot 1949-1951.

The loco started out as Bachmann's North British, but has had numerous alterations.

1. Chimney replaced with a cast resin plain type, courtesy of Graeme King. As RWweb member SAC Martin has said, makes a massive improvement to the look of the locomotive when applied to his fleet, and I too will be replacing my fleet over time.

2. Renumbered using HMRS pressfix transfers, plus renamed using 247 Development nameplates.

3. Wheels airbrushed plus frames using a mix of matt black, polished steel, matt grey and matt leather all from the Humbrol range. Loco body was treated with T-CUT to bring the shine out, with a touch of airbrush, but mainly powders.

Silurian is depicted as well used locomotive, but not so far worn looking as my 60124 'Kenilworth', currently my other Blue A1. :)

Ay up!

Silurian could almost be real. Just the tension lock coupling and the screw fitting in the return crank give it away.

Well done, Tom!

A nice job. There's no doubt in my mind that a replacement chimney perfects the Bachmann A1. I am still wondering why on earth they decided to do make it like that, in two pieces.

Thanks Simon :)

Totally in agreement with you, I'm guessing the two piece decision was so they could switch between ease of lipped and unlipped...surely though it would have been possible to do two cast chimneys instead?

What really surprises me in contrast to Graeme's, is how overly wide the base of the bachmann one is, and how squat the chimney is....looks very poor once compared, and like yourself I don't think I can live with the rest now I've seen the light. ;)

Sanding down the boards tomorrow....have dark grey paint at the read ;)

Lovely picture Arthur :)

Well this evening I've done a few tweaks to 60121 today, altered chimney to fit better, plus given a protective layer of Testors Dullcote.

Some comparisons with the Gateshead specimen, pleased with the difference. :)

Re: LEAMAN ROAD 50A. Tom's Layout and Work Bench

Today has seen another step forward on the layout.

I've somewhat finalized my track plan, after a couple of days of just seeing how things looked. I'll tell you what though....14ft doesn't seem that much space when you're using Peco Large Radius turnouts! :O

Here is the updated track plan. As one can guess, things aren't entirely in scale with each other, so areas look rather spacious, and others around the carriage sidings looks cramped. It's isn't particular on the layout itself as the photos below look.
Image

The main change that wasn't shown in my original plan, is the move of position of wet ash pits. They now are on the the approach to the coaling tower as cab be seen, as it seemed far more logical (and looking at other NE Shed plans) that the ash is dropped first when arriving on shed, then coaling and finally turning.

See what you guys think anyhow. :D

Very much like what you're planning to do there! I'm looking for an engine shed similar to the one in your photo - please could you tell me which one it is, or did you build it yourself?

Seems nice and spacious Tom. There's a temptation in many cases to try and squeeze too much into a board space and it looks like you've successfully resisted this. Looking good.

Dave.

Many thanks :) I'm really pleased with how it's coming along

The engine shed is the Bachmann Scenecraft, it might not be strictly LNER, but it looks good...ther LNER feel comes from the Townstreet Coaling stage, it's now finished and just requires painting which I will do tomorrow :)

Cheers Dave

I've worked out that I could get away with maybe the odd other siding, but very little more otherwise like you say, it will start to look cramped, I want the layout to have enough space to breath so to speak.

I'm just on the lookout now for a D&S LNER Crane for my Civil Engineer siding.... ;)

Ay up!

Let me echo the comments re spaciousness. The only minor criticism is that all 4 shed roads should have pits.

Keep the piccies coming. I feel inspiration!

Hey BB

Just one of those compromises on size, and the Scenecraft shed looks rather nice :)
Oh there will be plenty more piccies for sure.

I've been busy filling in the gaps on the Townstreet Coaler where certain castings didn't line up....it's looking alot better and will have coat of paint later today :)

 there is only pits on two of the shed roads, not all 4 ;)

the other pits near the Cenotaph are wet ash pits....I thought you were referring to a 4 road shed being too small.
