LNER A4 liveries

I have recently been working on a single chimney A4 on a CAD program and have transferred it into MS paint and am hoping to recreate all the A4 liveries. I have three so far. Please let me know if there are any accuracy issues with the A4's, as they are all 100% from memory. Please click on the attachment links, the detail will be a lot clearer.

The green is very wrong, the blue looks too pale. Try ripping the colour from various colour pictures and then averaging them if you know how to do that.
Its good to know where you stand. Saves making a fool of yourself later......

I was thinking more of the detail of the loco, the colours are just the bog standard MS paint ones for now

Have a look at www.elegantsteam.com because that site gives a better idea of what you are trying to do. Even then not perfect but getting near to it both in outline and colour rendition!

Hi,

Leaving aside the contentious issue of colours, the thing that strikes me is that the length of the A4, seems all wrong, particularly the distance between the rear drivers and the rear pony truck. If I'm wrong andyou have it right, then I apologise.

Reproducing colours accurately on a generic computer screen is such a lost cause that I chose not to do it on this site.

re. the LNER green: I'm not sure if you are aware but that livery variation did not last very long at all. The straight line smokebox line is a good one to catch experts out with, but it was quickly changed to the parabolic curve (as per the Garter Blue).

I am well aware of that, and I've always been rather fond of the apple green A4's with the staight smokebox line, tis a shame that Hornby won't do one until people start bugging them (I don't see it as a 'profitable livery' at all, unfortunately).

I myself have had second thoughts about that gap, and the gap between the leading bogies, but I changed it and it didn't quite look right :?

I am currently wanting to repaint and renumber a model A4 locomotive as 'Dominion of New Zealand' but in the pre Nationalisation livery. I have seen Hornby model as BR but presume the actual livery when it was LNER 4492 could well have been different (and I do not assume that the current renumbering and renaming 'Bittern' as 'Dominion of New Zealand' is what it would have been prior to 1947).
I would be grateful for any help help, plus, if possible a colour photo of DNZ in that pre 1947 era.

The only differences as far as I am aware between 60019's repaint and the original 4492 are:

The original had a single chimney, and 60019 obviously has a double kylchap blastpipe.

The original had polished tyres, 60019 has hers painted as there was not enough time to polish them (she needed to be ready in time for the GB IV).

The green one with a non curved painted front looks terrifying. It is good they changed it.

Another odd one was Silver Link with the sides of the "wedge" kept silver. Richard's encyclopedia shows one photo of it.

4492 and the other Coronation A4s did not have polished tyres on building. This may have changed during their working life as a result of shed attention but the spec gives wheels and tyres as crimson and it is thus that they are mainly photographed.

Silver Link did not enter traffic until repainted with the usual parabolic curve.

Plain Black is another option

Chrome Letters and Numbers on the "Coronation" Locos and post war

Woodcock was in Plain Workshop Grey with Green Wheels for a short time too

I must admit, I have never come across any photos of Coronation A4's where they had crimson tyres (or I just haven't noticed it :oops:)

Really interested to see the 3 different colours you have illustrated but this is really a query as I'd be interested to know what names and numbers as LNER (rather than BR) A4s ran in the (was it) Apple Green. Being new to this I had associated any 'Greens' to have been BR after nationalisation in 1947.
Also, I understand the valances were removed during WW2 to make maintenance easier. Is this correct and as I'm trying to be as accurate as possible in renaming and renumbering odd BR A4s to LNER (ie during the 'Big 4' era) is it safe to assume that I should stick to locos with valances?
Finally, for this period would they have been single chimney and which tenders would have been the norm?
