GNR Atlantics @ Bressingham.
I called into Bressingham today and was pleasantly surprised to see the two GNR Atlantics in their Engine Shed.

I was at the NRM in York in May and asked where they were and was told Bressingham, which was unfortunate for me.

So am I right in thinking that whilst access to the NRM sites is free and they are open all year, for the moment it costs a minimum of £8.50 to see these two publicly owned treasures, with no access at all during winter months? Hmmmmmmmm......

That's the price they paid for getting Oliver Cromwell back on the main line as far as I know. Green Arrow was there for a long time. I'm pleased to see they're under cover - last time I visited 990 was out in the yard being used as a climbing frame.

Incidentally, the NRM, last I heard, was still trying to pin the blame on shunting damage to 990 by the LNER on the Worth Valley! I suspect machinations behind the scenes here...

I always hoped that place would loose its interest in railways when Alan Bloom turned them up...no such luck unfortuantely. Seems odd how they have a cast iron grip on publically owned objects.
I wonder if you turned up with a clip board and demanded to inspect part of your engine?

I visited Bressingham years ago and thought it an odd place regarding the railway collection. Is the GER 2-4-0 still there? I didn't realise both GNR Atlantics were there, 990 was the only one present when I was (this was roughly ten years ago though). British loco wise, there was also Royal Scot, Oliver Cromwell, a Terrier, and I think a pre-grouping large passenger Tank

The large pre-group tank was Thundersley, the Tilbury tank. At least 2500 has been put in the NRM. Royal Scot was, I believe sold as was Duchess of Sutherland.

There are lists on their site. Didn't see any mention of the Duchess (I thought there was one when I was there in the 80s - along with a 4MT or similar giving cab rides?), but the Royal Scot is mentioned as being restored to running use and will be making return visits. So if was sold, there must be an agreement that they get it for events or footplate rides?
Don't they also have a standard gauge (industrial) Garratt and a crane tank?

The garret must be from Baddesley? pit near Coventry, The CT must be from Doxfords at Sunderland and last time i passed there was a fireless loco as a gate guardian, oh and a narrow gauge line.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Three narrow gauge lines - or there used to be - 15in and 2ft. The latter with Hunslets or Hunslet look-alikes.

I wouldn't mind paying to see the Atlantics, but not in the hands of Bressingham. I always drop a fiver in the coffers at the NRM anyway.
You only have to read the more full story on Nat Pres (which has never been reported in the railway press - I wonder why) to see their mismanagement of Royal Scot, and certain names which float to the top every single time...
I sincerely hope they are not going to be there for an extended period - wouldn't it be nice to have the three GNR survivors and Scotsman together to celebrate 90 years since the grouping in 1923?
