Re: Tom's Layout and Work Bench
The Schools chassis would obviously be an option - at a cost. Is it free of traction tyres? If so, that might be a predictor af a tyre-free chasis under the new Railroad D49 (as and when it eventually happens).
Regarding the Hornby Gresley A1/A3 expansion link: It is possible to reduce the visual impact of the excessive length, and prevent the eccentric rod from assuming such a silly nose-down postion, by adjusting the outer ends of the stretcher that supports the visible parts of the motion bracket. Carefully tweaking upwards the stretcher ends with fine nosed pliers, followed by further adjustment of the brackets to restore their outer faces to the vertical, tucks the bracket up much more tightly against the running plate (as it should be) and raises the pivot point of the expansion link. This does put a slight bend or kink into the radius rod where it is (unrealistically) rigidly attached to the slidebar support bracket, but I think that is the lesser evil, and it reduces the need to contemplate pulling the valve gear apart to replace or shorten the expansion link itself.

You might like to compare your "Lemberg" with the real thing in its later days. At the time of the photo it was on stanby duty at Darington a job that was also done by "Colombo". it acqired the smoke deflectors in its latter days.

Re: Tom's Layout and Work Bench
Right, a went for a little venture this evening, 1/4 mile up the road to get some photos as the sun was getting low in the sky, wanted to show up hopefully some of the texture on the boiler and tender sides. Todays loco was 60124 'KENILWORTH' another 52A loco, and equally as grubby. 60045 had a bit of sprucing done to her too.
Like before, mixture of paint powders and Johnson's Klear, plus attention to the connecting rods and axle boxs to give them a greasy look.

G'Day Gents
That setting sun gives a wonderful view of your locos throws every rivet into stark relief, great effect

The sunlight gives wonderful effects, but with the sun in the position it was this evening..it allowed to show the different layers of weathering on both locos. Hopefully giving something of realism, that a quick spray with an airbrush just can't achieve.
The view over the dry stone wall wasn't bad too!

I'm quite pleased with the results....about to head out and remove the last bits of old baseboards from the layout....next week picking the new baseboards up....full steam ahead!

Re: Tom's Layout and Work Bench
I happily confess to drooling over your photos, the recent ones (since March) are especially stunning. Since Kenilworth is about to come a cropper in photo 4, can we send you back out with all your Pacifics next time the sun is low? Or perhaps you have a gallery on Flikr or somewhere you can point us to?
I wasn't lucky enough to lay down any bottles of Johnson's Klear - has anyone had any railway modelling experience of the new formulation, Pledge Multi-surface Wax, or even Quick Shine from Lakeland which the fly-boys think is quite good?

I'll be heading out again when the next loco is weathered for some autumn sun.....just seems to capture what I've been trying to achieve! but I've knackared my airbrush (was only a cheapy)
So I'll be getting a new one in the next few weeks.....I'm thinking a rather dirty good loco next....

Re: Tom's Layout and Work Bench
Evening Gents.
While I have a new airbrush on order, I have been stripping the weathering of a K3 seen earlier in this thread, I figure in eagerness at first using the airbrush for the first time, I over did it slightly.
So I stripped the paint off with microsol, then started with the T-Cut which brought out a nice sheen on the boiler and tender. I then began using a small amount of thinners and Mig Powders, to try and get the same effects I've found with the airbrush.
Quite pleased

Tom - leave well alone. That's an effect the rest of us would kill to be able to achieve! Well done!
So - muck it up then clean off the muck. Loco cleaning in 4mm! I like it!
