Ruddy hell, manna! You must've been like a drowned rat. That's a damp tramp across the fields to that short stretch twixt the tunnels. What a spot though.

Was this the famous "Red Bank Empties", which, in my '60s spotting days, which could have two LMS and/or LNER 4-6-0s in any combination (B1/B16/Black 5/Jubilee/Patriot/Scot) with the occasional V2 thrown in, although I believe it was usually two Black 5s.

I witnessed one of the few ECML double-headed pacifics in York, in about 1960 (it may have been the above train) - "Hycilla" and "Sir Ralph Wedgwood" IIRC. There is actually a published photo of this, taken near Thirsk.

Doubleheaders can be rare to find these days, but I'd like to see Flying Scotsman and Tornado doublehead with each other one of these days. It may not happen, but you'll never know.

Thinking about it, the two perfect matches for double heading would be:

Flying Scotsman and Green Arrow

Tornado and Blue Peter

Or..... you could have a train with an A4 at each end, a bit like a HST :)
