George Hinchcliffe

Post by Atlantic 3279 »

I thought it might be appropriate to mention, for those who knew of the man but were unaware of recent events, that the Daily Telegraph yesterday published news of the death on September 20th, at the age of 89, of George Hinchcliffe - one-time apprentice steam fitter, co-founder of Gainsborough Model Railway Society, prolific O Gauge locomotive builder, and manager of Flying Scotsman for its 1969/70 US tour.

Reported in 'Railway Herald' last week as well. I knew him vaguely when he was manager of Steamtown, Carnforth in the 1970s. My father speaks highly of him from that time. There was a feature on his layout in BRM in the not too distant past - in an annual, perhaps?

William McAlpine is on record saying that if it wasn't for George Hinchcliffe's dash across to America , Flying Scotsman would still be there.
