Re: The Perfect Double-header?
I never saw double headed Pacifics at all in the York Area, but I do know that there was one working, which I missed, that could require two pacifics. The Hull portion of a particular Kings X express was worked to Doncaster by a B1 where it was normally coupled up to the York portion which was worked forward by the York Train engine, usually an A1.
When traffic was heavy it required two seperate trains to be employed, but Hull had no Pacifics and so York provided two. In any case the Hull to Doncaster had a weight restriction. The train from York was double headed by a pair of pacifics as far as Doncaster where the leading loco was detached and took over Hull to Kings X portion that had been brought from Hull by a B1. The two trains then proceeded seperately.
A re-enactment of this working could be arranged using Tornado and Blue Peter from York. Talk a about super-power.

I understand it was first applied to the O4s but may have been extended to any 2-8-0.Boris wrote:I thought the Mexbrough Pacifics were their 07s[WD 2.8.0s]
I could be wrong.
It has happened before.
It will, I have no doubt, happen again.

Re: The Perfect Double-header?
Slightly off my own topic here, but has a triple-header ever been tried with standard gauge tender locos?

Re: The Perfect Double-header?
Ay up!
Yes, Blackout, the Worth Valley have had a couple of triple headers early in the morning to get locos down to Keighley, occasionally with a loco on the back for good measure! I always think that three on one is one too many!

The attached are pretty good Double-Headers. Only thing to better the B12 + B1 one would for them to be in green with a rake of teaks.

Re: The Perfect Double-header?
If it is true that Sam Fay wanted the GC to run 4000 ton capacity coal trains from Wath to Immingham, using the 1914 Baldwin designed 2-10-2 loco, would one loco have been equal to the task (presumably at crawling pace), or would it have been a case of two of these wee beasties up front Would assistance in the rear also have been required in awkward places? That should have blackened the clean washing on any local clothes-lines quite nicely .
