The Perfect Double-header?

Double-headers are a rarity in preservation and usually only come about with a pair of black fives. There have been many famous pairings like 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley and 60532 Blue Peter, 4771 Green Arrow and 92220 Evening Star and black fives 44871 and 44781 in the re-run of the Fifteen Guinea Special. What do you think would be the perfect double header?

I'm gonna kick it off with 4771 Green Arrow and 506 Butler Henderson.

I remember being on a railtour once that had 4472 and Hardwicke double heading for a few miles out of Carnforth.

I am not sure how much effort the 2-4-0 contributed, or whether it was being 'pushed' by Scotsman.

Hardwicke was replaced by Mayflower at Foxfield (I think). Now that really was a quality double heading - an A3 and a B1.

I remember seeing a photo of Scotsman & Green Arrow double heading on the Little North-Western in the winter, both in LNER livery. Great picture by Nigel Trotter, if I remember rightly.

Ay up!

Owzabout the Worth Valley's Iron Lung (that's a WD 2-8-0 for the non-Mirfield oiks on this forum) and the NRM's Mexborough Pacific (O4 to the uninitiated) on the Windcutter rake at the GCR? Only question: which should lead?

Or:

A pair of 9Fs on the same train

OR:

44422 plus either Braunton or Boscastle or 53809 on 14 bogies on the West Somerset?

(Mrs BB - he's off again! Pass the bromide....)

hmmm, I'd had a thought about Scotsman and Green Arrow, but the problem is Scotsman would always take the lead :(
I've also come across a photo of Scotsman with Sterling Single No1, and Scotsman was in front, typically.

Q6 and Q7 would be nice! To quote a fellow Donnyman "POWERRRRRR".

J27 and J15?

Sadly those first ones would have to be on heritage lines only...

Howsabout Sir Nigel Gresley and Tornado? Would be even better when they're both in BR Blue! Or Oliver Cromwell and Duke of Gloucester?

Green Arrow and a K class, both in LNER green (Doncaster or Darlington), on a rake of teaks.

Though, at the risk of being permanently ostracised from this forum, I quite fancy a pair of GWR Castles with a rake of Colletts and Hawksworths too...

And whilst we're practising heresy, a pair of Garratts on the Welsh Highland, the Earl and the Countess on the Welshpool, Dolgoch and Tal-y-llyn...

Yes, Green arrow and the Great Marquess would be brilliant and I think they may have double headed (on the Esk Valley railway as far as I recollect) in 2008. The Great Marquess has certainly subbed for Green Arrow in the 90's when the V2 wasn't available, so it would be a brilliant prospect. All we need now is an eligible millionare bachelor to get the 'ol girl' back on her feet, or in this case, monoblock cylinders :roll:

J15 & J21 they could almost be class mates.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Me, I'd like to see 'Tornado' and 'Blue Peter' taking 20 over 'Stoke' :shock:

I've also seen a 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garratt and a 4-8-2 working 22 coaches across the desert from Broken Hill---Bliss 8)

I dont know Oz but are you anywhere near the preserved RODs Manna?

Hi everyone,

So I am going to throw in a little swerve here.
While everyone is thinking big and going for the larger locomotives which if my life depended on it I would say
a pairing of Green Arrow and Morayshire!

However, I am going to vote for a pairing of the Y7s 68088 and 1310, probably with only 1 bogie, over Stoke!!! :lol:
