Actually, Coachmann, 46229 ran in BR Green for its last weekend of boiler ticket over at the East Lancs and I couldn't get there for it! Fume!! Rant!!!! With vineals now availabe for just about anything one can dream up, I feel now is the time to dress a rake of Mk. I's up in grained teak livery. No lining as this would look plain silly. such a rake would look better behind the LNER liveried mainline locos than all the other liveries put together.....which they often are!!!

One thing I was meaning to ask and now I have the opportunity to with the picture of Green Arrow in apple green is her wheels. Why are they black? Is it weathering from barely three years of work or were they left black from her repaint?

I'm certain that the appearance in that photo is a trick of muck and shadow. The cleaned but not repaired Green Arrow that I saw in Shildon in May '09 had green wheels, although the "black" frames and underside of running plate were rough and grey, presumably the consequence of exposure to grit, grime and weather.blackout60800 wrote:Green Arrow in apple green is her wheels. I like the idea. We'd then see what Eastern Region might have done to its prestige trains had it been allowed the same sort of reassertion of group identity that allowed LMR to turn out Crimson Pacifics, WR its chocolate and cream coaches and green humble mixed-traffic engines, and the oceans of green coaches on Southern Region. Any idea how much it would cost to print and apply ersatz teak vinyl wrap to a coach????
If the teak is too much of a challenge, I quite like tourist livery as a second choice.

I've seen Green Arrow four times since her boiler certificate ran out, once at Shildon, three times at York and I must admit I didn't take a blind bit of notice of the wheels, I was too busy being overwhelmed at the sight of her (I get VERY emotional around Green Arrow). I have to admit I even cried when I saw her at Shildon for the first time in two and a half years Always was bleedin hard to catch that V2 anywhere, regardless of a boiler certificate or not!

Get your hankie out again. Green Arrow, Shildon May 2009. Note the generally near-black oil and muck on the wheel, but Green showing on the balance weight, and through the muck around the white-lined black axle-end.

Dream on! Pete Waterman isn't particularly interested in the LNER (although I'm told he does have a bit of a liking for Thompson coaches..... Hasn't put any money into the sole example that is currently under restoration afaik, though)

yep, network rail (or whoever owns the Whitby line) won't let pacifics up there because the wheels scrape on the final bend and the 9F isn't allowed because of it's flangeless wheels, which according to network rail will cause it to derail. It's the flangeless wheels which keep the bleedin thing on the curves

They won't let pacifics down because of flange sraping? So why did they let Pacers down for ages? They squeal on straights! Actually, from what I heard it was the A4 preservation group, after their first run down there with 60007 that suggested that A4's shouldn't go down there.
I bet they wouldn't let the Q6 down, though I can't remember if it has any flange-less wheels...
Speaking of the Autumn Gala, I know it's rostered, but I doubt 75029 will be ready in time. I wonder what the 'Mystery Guest' could be?

I was told elsewhere that the objection to flangeless wheels these days is that somebody has decided that it is good idea to raise check rails above running rail level in certain places on the national network, so if you don't have a flange to prevent the possibility of the tread climbing onto the check rail (can the flangeless wheels really run that far across?), then the raised flangeless wheel is presumably considered capable of lifting other wheels off the rails too. Sorry for further digression. On the original point, I'll be glad to see a Garter Blue, fully valanced A4 and teak coaches, whether or not the parabolic lining on the A4 is a bit dodgy and the crests of the previous BR livery are evident in relief through the blue paint on tender.........
