LNER Shed query
This does sort of relate to LNER through the shed.
Can anyone a bit older than me (I was born 14 years to late!) tell me where (in it's short lived life) Evening Star was shedded, as I know it is now in 50A, but I noticed for the first time this week, (after seeing it many times) it carries a 50A plate on the front.
Is this a later addition eg. where it lives now, or was it always like this!

But I don't know how you could go about finding shed versus year for a given loco.

Thanks for that, it does only go up to 1960, but it is about this time that York stopped being a 'Shed' and now there is nothing regular based here, only preserved and stored.
And if I'm right as I can't find numbers either, that the 9Fs were all 92xxx then at 1960 non were based in York, but they might have been if the space wasn't taken by nasty diesels. Although the Protoype Deltic crashed North of York at Thirsk, and was shedded at York for a while, until being scrapped!

Well, from what I can see in the material I have, 9F's were plentiful further north. There were some stationed at Blatdon on Tyne (shed code 52C) in 1960 and I have photographs of them in the Tyne and Tweed areas during the 60's. In fact one was used to close the Alnwick branch in 1966.
Maybe Colombo can help, that is where he grew up.

Because Evening Star was turned out from Swindon in 1960, it does not appear in my Locoshed book for 1959, neither does it appear in the on line Locoshed Index for 1960 which is based on the summer 1960 Locoshed book.
My recollection is that 92220 was a WR engine and often used on the S&D. During the summer of 1962 it was used on the Somerset and Dorset and again in late summer 1963. I have found a photograph dated 28th April 1963 in Steam on Shed by John Stratton. The shed plate is just legible and appears to be 81F, and the location is Oxford shed, also 81F. The shed plate in the summer 1962 photo does appear to be eighty-something, but not 81F.
After premature withdrawal from service, it turned up in York in the 1970s and I had a run with her round the York-Leeds-Harrogate-Knaresborough loop at a time before the York-Scarborough route found favour for steam trips. Presumably this was due to the TT at Scarborough being out of commission.
I believe that that the 50A shed plate relates to its regular use at that time.
Whilst the 9Fs regularly turned up at York in their revenue earning service, I do not recollect any being shedded at York. At one time brand new 9Fs arrived in York North Yard on an almost daily basis probably on running in turns, and sometimes we spotters witnessed white coated technicians swarming over them.
There was an allocation of 9Fs at Tyne dock shed (52H): 92060-92066 and 92097-92099 from 1959 to 19 November 1966. They were used top and tail for the Consett iron ore trains from Tyneside which involved a gruelling climb.
These locos were specially fitted with air compressors to open the doors on the special bogie hoppers used for that traffic. They had replaced the ex-NER Q7s and were themselves replaced with Class 40s. I am pleased to say that I witnessed them in action whilst on a 6 weeks vacation training course at Consett iron works.
Finally 92099 was commandeered to work the last day on the Alnmouth to Alnwick passenger service which consisted of the usual two coach branch train. Motive power was short in the area and previously the V2 60836 from Dundee had been retained by Alnmouth shed in May 1966 after a failure and had been used on the Alnwick shuttle and the Amble Harbour coal trains for some time until the protests from north of the border reached such a pitch that it was reluctantly returned to Scotland - after several weeks, it seems.

On asking my Father, it seems to have been based in the West and South Wales (my Birth Place).
So it must have been a later addition, it's just an odd one, I don't recal seeing a 50A plate on anything before, everything else from York would be about scrapped!

On Addition
On visiting the museum today Monday 2nd, I visited Evening Stars Footplate, and notice how huge the thing is compared to Mallard's Cab, it looks so sparse in comparison, but I noticed the Tender was built in 1959 and the Engine in 1960, did it change tenders in only 5 years service? Or was the tender built first..now there's a point

In fact the preserved J27, 65894, was a long time resident of 50A and a firm favourite. It was regularly used on the local goods run to Foss Islands yard and Rowntrees Chocolate Factory.

LNER Shed Query
York briefly had five(?) 9Fs.
As I recall, they were swopped for the Standard 5s that York had from new. They didn't stay long, and I often wondered what they were for.
I cannot trace all the numbers, but there is a photo on the front of the December 1993 BRIL of 92005/6/39 together in York shed. One has no shed plate and I can't read the other two - perhaps they had just arrived.
I also have a magazine photo of 92231 (which I believe was a York loco) at Polmadie with 50E on its smokebox!
Returning to Evening Star, I have both Swindon and Cardiff Canton listed as her first shed, and later at Cardiff East Dock.
I have a magaazine photo of her witha F plate dated8/9/62 (the last Pines).

I have found the allocations to York 50A for Autumn 1961 and November 1965 in Railway Memories No. 5 by Peter Rose.
In 1961, there were 154 steam locos and 49 diesels. The steam locos also included the now preserved K1 62005.
According to Paul Bolger, there were eight 9Fs allocated in 1965: 92005/6/205/206/2211/21/31/39 as well as K1 62005 and J27 65894.
In November 1966 there were 21 steam and 98 diesels. There were two 9Fs 92231 and 92239.
The Fairburn Class 4 2-6-4T preserved on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, no. 42085 was also allocated to York in 1959.

I've got the book too, but can't get hold of the first one though, the just York book.
It is a good book for the likes of me, as I don't remember any of it. But one thing I want to know is, the huge coaling plant, where did it stand, as the map doesn't point it out to people like me, is it the bit over the road from the laundry?
I said everything else would be JUST about scrapped....so 144 of them are!

92220 Evening Star was allocated to Cardiff Canton when new in March 1960, then to Bath Green Park (for the Somerset & Dorset work) August 1962, Old Oak Common October '62, Oxford November '62, back to Bath August 1963, and finally to Cardiff East Dock October '63 being withdrawn after collision damage in March 1965. A somewhat iff picture can be found at http://peter8455.videopic.net/p7964672.html of it on Bristol Barrow Road shed on the morning of 3rd August 1964 and it was observed the following day at home on Cardiff East Dock shed.
