A4 4492, NYMR Autumn Steam Gala

Post by Bryan »

Message taken from NYMR forum

I can at last confirm that agreement has been reached for the above engine to attend the Gala, now subject only to engineering acceptance and confirmation of movement arrangements (requested).

The intention is to use the locomotive on the following dates:

· 30.09 - 02.10: Autumn Steam Gala (working with the Teak set) - PLEASE NOTE NOW INCLUDES FRIDAY

· 04.10: Ceremony commemorating restoration of Pickering Station

· 14-16.10: Railway in Wartime – again working with the strengthened Teak set to give a typical LNER train from the period.

It may also work on certain days during the intervening period. Details to follow.

For those not aware, the loco (actually ‘Bittern’) is currently running as LNER streamline era garter blue livered No 4492 Dominion of New Zealand. To the best of my knowledge this will be the first time since the 1940s that an LNER livered A4 and coaches have been paired together. "

I would add early 1940s for an A4 in full streamlining!

I've come across the same news myself and It's fair to say I drooled at the thought of a Garter Blue A4 hauling a teak set  and will definitely not miss the event. I saw 4492 at York on the Great Britain IV and was quite literally speechless. I never thought I'd see a Garter Blue A4 in steam, never mind with the NYMR's teaks

I was under the impression that when Mallard steamed in the 80s she had full streamlining? Or maybe I misunderstood.

Anyhow, I will DEFINITELY be visiting the NYMR (as always) for this gala.

Majormagna, I think Bryan meant an A4 in full streamlining hauling a teak set. Mallard was indeed restreamlined from the start of preservation and was repainted into garter blue. When restored for the 1988 celebrations she was again repainted by Brel of Doncaster and wears the same valances and coat of paint to this day

I can still remember the privilege of seeing Mallard in the paint shop back in 1986.
John Bellwood of the NRM took pity on a 19yo on his first visit to England from Australia who was disappointed that Mallard was not at the NRM. John arranged for me to visit the Plant and although I have seen Mallard many times since, that will always remain the most exciting.

Ah, in that case, my bad. It's not often the NYMR even sees a loco in LNER livery, last time was Green Arrow (Which I missed :( ) And I have no idea what the one before was; wouldn't surprise me if it was the K4 or the Q7!

I don't mind black, just give me NER lined black from time to time :P

I'd agree that Green Arrow was the last LNER liveried engine at the NYMR for their legendary LNER gala back in 2008. I remember just catching a glimpse of Green Arrow as I boarded a train to Pickering headed by 60007. That was the last time I saw Green Arrow in steam, and I just think she dosn't look right as 4771 in apple green. I'll always remember the fist time I saw her as a little kid at York in 2001 in Br Green and I've been mesmorised by Gresley's amazing V2 ever since

Call me a heretic, but it's how I first saw Green Arrow in Br green and in apple green she just looks like a belittled knock off of Flying Scotsman that the NRM dosen't seem to care about, and believe me, I have seen plenty of ignorant people walking up to Green Arrow saying 'ooh it's the Flying Scotsman' and then turning away in disappointment when they read the nameplate  and to add even more, half the bleedin thing is covered by that exhibition on speed and Duchess of Hamilton

Ay up!

I've seen GA in both liveries and, TBH, much prefer Apple Green, even to the point of laboriously painting and lining my PDK V2 in this livery. There's a lot of lining on Apple Green, let me tell you!

Now, all I need is some teaks. I've made a start - two corridors and three Kirk non-corridors.....

Several decades ago there was a dispute as to how a preserved 'Schools' hould be finished, and so nothing is new. The old boys wanted the 'Schools' in SR olive green without smoke deflectors, afterall it was only some 35 yrs before that it was like that. Younger enthusiasts wanted it in BR green as that, according to them, was how most people remember the 'Schools'.

At this distance in time, I'm all for BR liveries. Pre- 1948 liveries are fine if one has the appropriate stock to run behind them. Otherwise the whole ensemble is a mismatched b*llocks.

I'm looking forward to seeing the 'Duchess' Pacific in BR green. Pulling a rake of Mk.I's in blood & custard is too much to expect I suppose!

Trouble is it's been done, though not on a Duchess maybe. Funnily enough, a BR green Duchess has never been run in preservation, and considering it was the longest lasting livery for the class and that BR green had been applied to many other locos, this is a first.

With vineals now availabe for just about anything one can dream up, I feel now is the time to dress a rake of Mk. I's up in grained teak livery. No lining as this would look plain silly. such a rake would look better behind the LNER liveried mainline locos than all the other liveries put together.....which they often are!!!

Apologies if I read this wrong, but are you suggesting Green Arrow should wear Br blue? :? As far as I'm aware the V2 has never heard of blue paint, never mind wore it and thank god it hasn't, it would be awful :( Br Green or Apple Green for me, and certainly not BR black, the ol' girl deserves way better than that :D
