You often see photos of locos well out of area having hauled summer and other excursions - for example Jubilees and Patriots at Scarborough, B1s at Blackpool, all sorts of locos at Neasden (for Wembley Stadium).
Does anyone know what the receiving company would have charged for for such services would have been in pre-BR days, as they would surely have gone well beyond 'running rights' territory and would have chewed up a lot of resources.

My guess is that this is some thing the RCH would have kept track of, and that the annual charges would have more or less balanced. The actual inter-company payments were therefore relatively small.

Would the visiting engines have required local staff on board for route knowledge?

It's highly likely that "foreign" engines would have had their own crews with a conductor driver aboard to advise on route knowledge. As happened until very recently, I believe.

Hi Blink Bonny, your quote recently on foreign engines and conductors. I am ex Agecroft, Patricroft & Crewe and getting on a bit in years,what usually took place when goods trains from another region came into our territory,the crew would be relieved regardless of the type of engine;this of course may create a little difficulty for us but we got by. As for passenger trains this being in the summer timetables, plus excursions the diagram of the loco played a major part: ie Yorkshire men on a Leeds Llandudno,and home on the cusions would be relieved by Patricroft men, they would also come home on the cusions,how the loco got back home is another thing. Same trip on a Sunday only Rhyl SR:short rest,this time a conductor would be provided and he would spend the day at Rhyl with the Yorkshire crew,hopefully they were all sober for their return. B1s,V2s & i believe K1s,2s.or 3s,came through although i never saw a K myself,the B1s i was used to from Agecroft although give me a Blk 5 anytime,as for the only time i was on a V2,then that was some engine,great trip on that engine.
