On BBC radio 4 this morning (03/08/11) a new website that has been opened by the national archives featuring railwaymen's records from 1893-1963.

Details of records are on the National Archives homepage and the search process is via Ancestry which is payable unless you sign up for a free 14 day trial.
Will have to try it for my grandfather who was a railway labourer in Chesterfield 1921, according to my mothers birth certificate.

Hello young man

Jumping in quick, can you see what you get if you put in 'Walter Capon'? He was on the ticket barrier at Welwyn Gdn City when I started and would have retired c 1968? Didn't know him well at all, just that his name has always stuck in my mind

I am not sure how complete the archive is, because I can find a record for a Walter Wainwright Capon born 7th January 1892 who began in company (LNER and constituents) service on 25th April 1910. This is dated 31st October 1939 and he was listed as station master at Nottingham Victoria on a salary of £7 13s 9d a week.

But, it seems he began his career on the GWR in November 1906 at Gloucester goods as a messenger on 8 shillings a week.

There are no others with that name listed.
