I have searched the index to the fully digitised version of the LNER Magazine and the name/word Joynes is not present. Not all staff are included in the staff changes list (my Father who joined in 1946 is not) but it's always a possibility that he started before Grouping, or prior to the 'all-line' version of the magazine appearing from 1927, or even that he joined the LMS or one of its constituents.
It might be worth making enquiries of the GC and GN line societies:

My research interests are more inclined to family history than the railway side in particular.
There are 2 Frederick Joynes b1898 on the 1911 census.
Both are living in Nottinghamshire at the time, but sadly because they are only 13 they are still at school, so not much help there.

As I am lead to belive Barnsley was under the catchment of the Lancahire and Yorkshire railway and then the subsiquently the LMS railway; as well as the Hull and Barnsley railway which became the North Eartern Railway in 1921 and then placed under the catchment of LNER. Records for all of thease companies should be available from the national archives.
