Sirs, My last Royal Train working we had a light engine following then normal working resumed. This would be when the Queen opened the Newcastle Metro. Class 47 locos used throughout. The Northallerton to Newcastle workings were by Thornaby footplatemen. This was the second time freight men from Thornaby were used for the Royal workings.

Micky

Re Royal trains into Liverpool Street. In 1967/8/9 as I worked just outside the station, I had a friend in the PR&PO Office who used to let me know when HM was arriving from Sandringham. At that stage she travelled on the usual 12 wheeler on the front of a Norwich service train behind a 47 and was met by one of the claret coloured Rolls. I think the problem would have been if she officially went outside the station.

You might however be right for earlier periods especially if the whole train was used.

Most of the GviR photos seem to have been taken at Kings Cross often with 1671 in charge.

I read that about the monarch NOT wishing to use Liverpool street station if they could help it in a railway book (probably by O.S.Nock?) 40 odd yrs ago?. I believe if the monarch was arriving on the 'complete royal train' the monarch would (i presume) officially be entering the 'City of London' then all the trappings had to be involved i.e. the Lord Mayor of (the City of) London would have to meet the monarch at Liverpool street station?.

G'Day Gents

At least one royal coach was kept at 'Bounds Green' in the 70's I think it was the NER car, it had the deep bowed under frame

That old Bounds Green carriage sidings & carriage sheds was an interesting place around the back as well (the bit that the punter's never saw from the passing trains). As alot of L.N.E.R. member's on this forum will know that there was the onetime road to & from Palace Gates around the back of the carriage sheds. When i had a look around the back around 1974/75 the two roads to & from Palace Gates were still there but ending at a wire fence although the two roads were leading away south from Bounds Green carriage sheds for a few hundred yards before they ended at the wire fence. Strangely there was still 'two distant signals' mounted on small white wooden posts worked by Bounds Green s/box still insitu on those roads and still a number of sidings roads as well.

Hello 52D, to be honest i havan't been around the Stratford area for a number of years now may be for nearly as much as 10 years but going on the photographs that i have seen of the stadium and the surrounding area it looks like it's been built off to the left of where Channelsea & Lee Junctions are if you are in a train going from Stratford towards Hackney Wick and the North London line if that makes any sense to you?. As for the old Stratford loco & sheds and other railway buildings that whole area has been wiped off the map!.

Does anyone know of a detailed drawing of the bowstring underframes used on the King and Queen's saloons?

I borrowed today a copy of Michael Harris' Great Northern Railway and East Coast Joint Stock Carriages from 1905, Oakwood Press which contains the information you are seeking including some photos and diagrams (but not detailed drawings BB).

Absolutely right about Thornaby men and the Royal Train. My father drove the Royal Train with a Class 47 in the late 1980's taking the Queen Mother from York to Sedgefield where they closed the branch for an overnight stay.

P.S. Driver Harold Clark send his regards.
