Have a look at this guys fantastic model of H.M.S.HOOD. If any ship stirs the emotions its this one.
Pity its not in English as there are probably some good modelling tips in the text.

Its Hungarian and there is a link at the top of the page to translate to English.

At Jutland if Beatty had'nt allowed his battlecruiser squadron get within range of the german battlecruisers we may not have lost the HMS Queen Mary and HMS Indefatigable.
The british battlecruisers had the greater range and could have shelled the germans without being fired back at.

What a truly amazing model. Even to the extent of putting the rigoles on each porthole and window. Pity the translation isn't working

Jutland was a very interesting battle. Basically we could have had it all sewn up if Jellico had turned towards a german torpedo attack, rather than away. Who won? Well, we lost more ships and men but the German fleet never came out again. So, take your pick.

I understood it as more of a "disappointing draw" with neither side gaining any objectives - but yes the "big strategic picture" was very much in Britain's favour.

Back to the Hood, Jon Pertwee (Dr Who No. 3) was a sailor on the Hood. Just before the outbreak of WW2 he'd just started a career in radio entertainment. Despite this tiny amount of entertainment radio experience, his CO thought it was enough to make him a radio operator, so at the next opportunity he was dropped off at Scarpa for radio operator training. This was about a week before she engaged the Bismarck. For the rest of his life he considered himself very lucky - and of course he never saw many of his friends again.

G'Day Gents

My grandad was at Jutland (stoker) so never saw a thing, but his ship, I think HMS Prince Albert, hit the SAME mine THREE times, and it never went off, grandad also said he was lucky that day !!!!

concerning the shade of grey HMS Hood was painted at various times. The Mediterranean Fleet Light Grey looks best to me - hence the expression "great white fleet".
