Re: News of the World
So the old 'Screws of the World' is done for. No surprise, really. Having viewed all this from a distance, without really looking into the details, I'd wager there's a lot more looking over of shoulders going on in the news biz.
What's really to blame here is the ever insatiable appetite of the public for the kind of sleaze 'journalism' that passes for news these days. How long before some TV companies are caught in the same position? Without hard evidence, but going purely by their general content, FOX TV could well be a prime candidate in the sleazebag stakes.

I think by closing the NotW Murdoch has taken a huge gamble that the British public are as thick as he thinks they are, and as long as he brings out a scandal filled Sun On Sunday they will boost his profit margins by buying it in droves. However, I am not sure the British public are as gullible as he hopes. They have had it "up to here" with greedy bankers and politicians raking in the cash while they go through one of the biggest personal finance recessions in the last 100 years (wartimes excluded).
If they get a sniff of the idea that Murdoch has binned the brand name just to make people think all the guilt will die with it, (just as Townsend Thorensen did after the Herald Of Free Enterprise capsized), then they are going to turn on his other companies with the same vigour they showed in hating bank chiefs and politicians.

Re: News of the World
I stopped buying newspapers years ago as they are full of tosh and wannabes, the only paper I will pick up and read, not buy, is the Sunday Post and even that has gone downhill from the friendly paper it used to be.
Anyone remember the Reynolds News ?, I hated Sunday mornings when I was a paper boy, three trips back to the shop as the papers were so thick, some of them wouldent go through the letterbox, wasnt until I could afford a second hand bike ( 7/6p Raleigh, I loved that bike) to carry them could I deliver in one trip, those days most of my pay went to help support the family even tho it was only half a crown with a bonus for selling football finals on a Sat night which was nigh on impossible if Newcastle got beat. I would always spend a few minutes looking at the Claud Butlers & Dawes in Harlan's bike shop window wondering how anyone could afford 10guineas, buying one of those was the pinnacle of my ambition those days, I never did get one but I did get a Triumph Tiger 100 motor bike later on when I was working, after I passed my test on a Tiger Cub.
Happy days ? I dont think so,kids dont know they are born these days.

If the NOTW only did one good thing it inspired a great song by The Jam! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAXeUKPwBj4

Ah, the joys of a paper round.
The day that the local weekly paper was published was my worst day, as almost everyone had one in addition to the morning national daily. Those were the days of the Herald and the Sketch which vanished soon after I started, also I think there was a News Chronicle (on a Sunday?).
We were supplied bikes with big bags on the front, but my round included a winding footpath between two housing estates. Once with a very full bag and pedalling rather slowly I could not control the bike on the bend and the whole thing just tipped over sending me into the ditch. Fortunately it had been dry so neither the papers nor me became too wet, but it took a while to get everything back into the bag in a sensible order.
One household on my round had Reveille every week, which was about as much porn as a 1960s teenager was ever going to encounter, so that was a perk.
On Saturdays I was also required to collect the weeks payment from anyone who did not pay at the shop, so riding around with a large amount of cash in my pockets was just another hazard. Back at the shop, the cash would be counted and I would have to make it tally exactly because any shortfall would be docked from my pay.
I am just glad that the local bullies were still indoors at that unearthly hour on a Saturday morning, or I would have been an easy target.

Re: News of the World
SS you could have had the same paper round as me except you would have to substitute Titbits for Reville. I can remember one of my mates sneaked up to a house when i had half posted Titbits, he removed the centrefold then reposted the paper.

The News Chronicle was a liberal daily and merged with the Daily Mail in 1960. I think that it was also responsible for the I-spy books.
