Good heavens, was it really half a century ago that the first production Deltic arrived on the ER?

Now I really do feel old.

Thanks for the links Neil; I may be in the minority here but for me the two-tone green with a small yellow front panel was the smartest livery these locos wore.

You're not in the minority strang steel, they really looked good in green and lime green. The Deltics were really something else in diesel locomotives. The high pitched whine was just as characteristic as the A4 whistle, even if second choice! It was the only class where I copped the lot, I think because spent three or four days at York in Summer 1964(?). When they took over the ECML, we had quite a lot of A4s coming through Wakefield, which was unusual - at least in the afternooon when I was trainspotting,

My abiding memory is spending 3 nights in a tent adjacent to the ECML a mile or two south of Stoke Summit in 1968. It was Autumn and so was dark by 7 p.m. and I just laid in my sleeping bag listening to the sound of Deltics either racing up the gradient on full power, or breasting the summit in the distance followed by the driver shutting off power, then the train passing by a few seconds later at high speed.

According to my calculations, it is 63 years since 9000 entered traffic in May 1948.



On a dieseling note, I went over to York in late May 1961 (just after I got wed) and again in the August. While there I photographed 'Alycidon'...... Only because I didnt know what it was!

According to my notes I went there by steam train on 2nd august 1961. Saw D9009 passing with 1A35 10.10 Edinburgh-Kings X.
