I believe that we should re-incarnate one of the original P2's. Since a re-incarnated 2001 "Cock O'The North", the first P2, is already in the works, I suggest that we should re-incarnate the last P2, 2006 "Wolf of Badenoch". This locomotive had a better boiler than the other P2's, which would be a significant factor today when hauling special trains on the main line.

When we are re-incarnating a P2, I believe that we should make the necessary changes to improve the locomotive, such as a spring-loaded pony truck, roller bearings and air brakes.

As well as Simierski mentioning the RAF theme the Harrier would be continuing a bird of prey theme used on a couple of LNER pacific classes.

COCK O' THE NORTH

The name has been chosen to reflect the power and imposing presence of the locomotive together with its association with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The name to be given to the Locomotive is ‘Cock O’ The North’ which is the traditional epithet attached to the Chief of the Gordon Clan, and reflects the historic power of the Highland Clans.

The name was suggested by Valerie Walter, the Company Secretary of PV Premier, whose grandfather served with the Gordon Highlanders during the First World War, with no prior knowledge of the name having been used by the LNER in the 1930s for a very similar type of engine.

The name was originally carried by Class P2 Locomotive 2001 which was completed in May 1934. The Class was designed to handle the express passenger traffic on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line, which is noted for its steep gradients and tight curves, so similar to the NYMR route of today.

The naming is scheduled to take place prior to the departure of the 10.30 train from Grosmont NYMR Station on Friday 22nd April 2011.

Stuart Whitter, Managing Director of PV Premier, said “It was not an easy decision to name the locomotive as, with the exception of Evening Star, the 9Fs did not carry nameplates. However, it is in response to an overwhelming demand from our customers who pay to support the heritage movement.”

I don't think it'll stop either of the P2 groups from choosing the name Cock O' The North, though I must confess I do find it rather odd to apply it to the 9F.

R.A. Riddles is a name which has been given recently to a fictional Mikado on RMweb, surely something along those lines would have been more suitable?

Of course, it is their engine, they can do as they like with it. But I feel it's a missed opportunity to name a 9F in accordance with the class's own history.

The 2-10-0 could have been names 'Urie Gagarin', a link with their nickname Spaceships.

On the otherhand, if the front of the 9F was given a P2 makeover and painted apple green fully lined out, it could look quite good. Riddles 9F was a better machine than the P2 anyway.
