Re: Kings Cross
Hull-London in 3 minutes was done by Hull Trains as a marketing ploy when the cl.222 units were introduced a few years ago and the service was speeded up.
I can throughly recommend this film, even if I was ever-so-slightly involved in the idea of making it!!

Re: Kings Cross
A bit too fast for the mileage to watch comfortably in my opinion.
Unless you are very familiar with the route, it's often hard to know where you are ; unlike London-Brighton in 5, 4 or 3 minutes.

Will admit to it being a bit fast! did find the stop at Grantham interesting plus the use of the pause button, not much left at Grantham, by the look of it all the old sidings on the down side seem to be behind a a wire fence? new houses planned I'll bet.

Re: Kings Cross
Just found these on the web. Kings Cross driver John Swaby, moved down to Topshed from Immingham the same time as I did, late 50s. Can remember this programme being on the tele over 20 years ago

Re: Kings Cross
Excellent set of clips - reminded me of my secondman days at KX.
Thank God old Swabey finally got on to the main line; he used to moan like nobodys business, when he was a driver in the suburban link, about us boys going hurtling down to Donny or York! All done in good fun though, as he was a good mate to be with on ECS and 1Shunt and 2Shunt.
Who was the co-driver and also the inspector on this run?
John C.

Re: Kings Cross
Have to agree with you Micky, I can remember doing well over the 'ton' down Stoke Bank in the mid 60s, but the HST and 91s were the next generation of power.
John C, not quite sure who the co-driver or inspector was on that bit of film. Dont really see enough of them to put a name to.

Re: Kings Cross
Ah, well I'm not saying it was less interesting on the Deltics, Micky, just that the clips reminded me of the days between 1970 and '73, when I also had the privelege of dashing up and down the main line doing the things you and JeffB describe. I'd left the Cross by the time HSTs arrived.
I also found the Hull Trains promo interesting but, like StevieG, generally too fast to appreciate the locations that we all knew then (after Donny).
There is a way of slowing down Youtube clips, but I haven't fully sussed it out. Any thoughts anybody?

The Traction Inspector on the Intercity 125 KX - Donny run was John Harradine. John has just retired from First Capital Connect as Project Manager for the Thameslink upgrade project.

Thanks very much indeed for posting these, Jeff, it just shows what professionalism was, and still is, involved in operating our railway.JeffB wrote:Have to agree with you Micky, I can remember doing well over the 'ton' down Stoke Bank in the mid 60s, but the HST and 91s were the next generation of power.

A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

Now I know Driver Swabey, can't always put names and faces together, been to Hertford and Welwyn a few times. Must admit I preferred a 47 to a Deltic, always felt uncomfortable in a Deltic, like being at school, sit up straight, no slouching!! a 47 could be a bit cold sometimes and the oven could rattle like mad, so you HAD to sit with your feet on it to quieten it down a bit, but you had a far better view, and I've been on a few 47's that have shown a 100mph or even a little over on there speedo's coming down Stoke, in those days it was a bit of magic to hit 100mph, but when the HST's and electrics took charge it and I became rather indifferent, although I still like the route and it's history. It's 20 years since I last rode the road down Stoke, and I missed it ? after a stop at Grantham I glanced at my book, before I knew where I was we were passing Peterborough !! still at 100mph........... Aww, bring back the dogleg

Re: Kings Cross
Didn't the 47s have a pin which stopped the speedo needle going beyond 100mph, which was as far as the dial read.
