A4 Sea Eagle in Doncaster green

The bands only came down to the top of the valance. Not sure about the roof though.

There is a picture of Sea Eagle in the excellent book Peter Townsend's East Coast Pacifics at Work. I am 99% certain the roof is all Black there appears to be no difference in the shading in the picture. Hopefully Hornby will produce this version at some time.!!

Perusing my book, Locomotives in Detail (Gresely 4-6-2) by David Clarke - page 43.
It seems that 4482 (the first of the eight locos painted Doncaster Green) had the green roof overall, not just to the rain-strip.
Interesting.
I am getting a OO scale Sea Eagle 4487 done in this colour, and will get the roof painted green. Perhaps the sliding vents were in black.

Also, I have not been able to find a copy of Peter Townsend's book.

I have just viewed the "Golden Age" model company video and all of their A4s seem to have black roofs down to the rain strip (except the Silver locos which were grey) so, for the price charged for these models, I would think they have researched fully. Having said that, the lining on the boiler bands on their "purple" model appear to go to the edge of the valance which I think is incorrect. There is a very good article on the "Sir Nigel Gresley Trust" site on A4 liveries named " An A4 by any other name"

Have just looked at Yeadons Register of the A4 and all photos although in b/w seem to indicate black roofs down to the rainstrip on all green & blue locos.
Sea Eagle had the black front end as far back as the 1st. boiler band.
Golden Eagle had the black front as a parabola on the sides and in my opinion was visually better.

Interesting that Golden Eagle had the black front in parabola.
This is confirmed by a b&w photo, claimed to have been taken in 1936, of 4482 at Great Ponton. It definitely has the parabola black. (Page 61 of Streamlined Steam by A J Mullay)
And on a closer inspection of the Clarke book, the black is parabolic on 4482.
Clarke Page 53 says that 5 of the green A4s had the full black front, Kingfisher 4483, Falcon 4484, Kestrel 4485, Merlin 4486 and Sea Eagle 4487. The green A4s with parabolic black front were therefore Golden Eagle 4482, Woodcock 4493 and Golden Fleece 4495.

Also, it looks like there were only two A4s, which ever had 8 paint schemes, Sea Eagle 4487, and Merlin 4486. And Merlin the only one that carried the same name throughout.

All were Sea Eagle or Walter K Wigham.

the 1949 one, is it in BR express blue or experimental purple? The reason I ask is RM dec2010 editorial had a touched up photo of Wigwam in a very purple shade of purple!

To pop my head into this post, may I ask what the red lining on the valances of prototypes looked like? Was it a single red strip following the bottom curve (ala the stainless steel trim on the coronation engines) or did it follow the edge of the valance all the way around, forming in effect a panel?

If anyone has and is willing to scan a photograph of Golden Eagle in her original condition and pop her up on here I'd really love to see.

Rear cover of the loose cover and page 91 on East Coast Pacifics at Work by Peter Townsend.
Its very faint as B&W photo but its there on Sea Eagle. I would scan you a copy but I dont think a scanner would pick tyhe lining up.
Best book I have ever seen on the LNER Pacifics by miles.
