Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
I thought I'd added some text to the shot of 60103 but it looks to have evaporated into the Ether....I'll try again. I was wondering about the Tees-Thames headboard, did it ever get carried all the way through or was it removed when the loco was changed (Grantham?), I saw the KX-Saltburn working at Thornaby on a number of occassions in the early 1960's but it was always an EET4 but this may have been after the train lost it's title. I was fortunate to see the KX-Saltburn arriving at Saltburn hauled by A4 60023 but unfortunately the date was lost along with my notebook many years ago, although I would suggest 1960 - on another occassion when leaving Saltburn by train I did see an unidentified A4 alongside what I believe to have been the KX ECS in the carriage sidings.
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
the A4 sightings, you ar'nt dreaming as they did the run, but as you recall only a couple of times. The head board was carried usualy by one of 51A's V2's, thinking back departure time from Saltburn was 06.50 ? (Darlington service train 06.55 ?), we oftern took it as far as Eaglescliffe then caught the Darlington train to do some spotting - in the early days it went into Stockton and was coupled up the rear of the Sunderland-Kings X. With the service becomming popular a new service was started Saltburn through to kings X this reduced train loadings and gauranted to have you in down smoke for lunch.
the head board is on the wall at NRM York

Hi, new to site and just reviewing what has gone before. Big, big interest in this line, particularly the Redcar, Marske and Saltburn section. Congratulations on unearthing some unusual photos, many that I have never previously seen. I have a large collection myself and will commence to 'share' when I have worked out how to perform the uploads!
Commenting on A4 workings through to Saltburn, apart from still vivid memories I also retain some old notebooks etc. In the summer months of 1958 I saw 60015 'Quicksilver' and 60023 'Golden Eagle' running through Redcar with passenger trains, but I do not know whether they were timetabled trains or excursions. I heard about the July 1961 working of 60019 'Bittern' on a Saltburn-KX train but did not see it myself - if, as has been suggested on here previously, there is a photo of this working on the Mid-Hants Railway website is it
possible for the person who found it to provide a link to it (I have tried and failed to find it)?
Most probably the final (BR) working of an A4 through to Saltburn took place on 30 July 1963 when 60023 (again) brought in a race excursion from Tyneside. The loco was serviced and turned at Thornaby MPD, passing Redcar East station no fewer than four times during the course of the day.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
In the late 1970's a good friend of mine worked on the Saltburn branch pay trains as a conductor, the pay train staff had a mess/locker room in the main station building at Saltburn & one day I was invited in for a cup of tea. In the room there was an old dissused fireplace & above it a large framed panoramic photograph of Saltburn station taken in pre-nationalisation years, the photo was taken from a height (possibly a signal gantry) & showed the station full of trains waiting to depart, I guessed it to be a posed photograph as the locos were all very clean & lined up in a way that would not have been possible during normal operations. At the time the pay train staff were aware that the messroom was shortly to be closed & my friend promised to do all in his power to secure the framed photograph for me but unfortunately this never happened - I've been searching for a copy of this photograph for many years without any luck, although I have been told that it may have appeared in a railway publication at some time - hopefully it will appear during the 150 celebrations.

Hi RedKlad,
It was me who mentioned there was a photo of A4 60019 Bittern on the Mid-Hants railway website. It could be found on their Mid-Hants Railway Topical Correspondence page (http://www.watercressline.co.uk/topical6.htm) but I can no longer find it.
You should have received a PM from me.
There are a couple of interesting photos of excursions approaching Redcar Central on the Colour Rail website (area 16) taken on Whit Monday 11/6/62. The photos show trains hauled by ex LMS 5MT 44917 and BR 5MT 73160. You can view small, albeit blurred, thumbnail pictures on the website. The BR 5MT appears to be the same train that Mr B posted earlier approaching Saltburn station.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Hi Ken.
Thx for getting back about the 60019 shot - I will respond to your offline e-mail (which I haven't read yet) tomorrow.
Thx also for the info regarding the Colour-Rail shots. I gather the two slides in question are difficult to get hold of these days, but I live in hope!
I am trying to secure somebody's permission to post a couple of Tees-Thames shots to the site and will hopefully secure that soon.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
The details on the back of this photograph read J39 1532 at Eaglescliffe on KX-Saltburn 1937 - as its such a small loco I suspect its hauling through coaches detached from the main train at either Northallerton or Eaglescliffe.
