WDs at Crewe Works in 1967

Post by gresley01 »

Im sorry if this has appeared before. I have only just discovered this site. Does anybody know the identities and reason for the appearance of approx. 30 x WD 2-8-0s for repair in Crewe works I think during 1967 and what subsequently happened to them ?

WDs re-appeared at Crewe Works for repair during mid to late 1966 when firstly Darlington and then Cowlairs closed. By this time they were only going there for "casual light" (i.e. relatively minor) repairs and were, as far as I can make out, NER allocated locos.

The only ones that I have traced to being there in 1967 were 90243/81 which were present in January when 70013 (officially the last BR steam repair) went through works. They returned to the NER shortly afterwards.

I suspect the 30 figure might be the total number of WDs that went through in the 1966/7 period, rather than 1967 itself.
