Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Mr.B: I can believe it! So much has changed, even in my lifetime. I can just remember an aerial spoil dumper like the one "Get Carter" in the Yorkshire Coal Field (near the A63 possibly?). I think the spoil hill is still there, but even the conveyor belt that replaced the aerial tramway has gone.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Funny how Get Carter keeps popping up in various threads. No doubt some of our North Durham contributors will give an exact location of the spoil buckets.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
The buckets were somewhere around the Seaham area, the shots on the coal staithes were North Blyth.

Uncle of mine had a small holding between Skinningrove works and Loftus mine, buckets over head, one decided to jump the wire near miss to the house and iron ore every where.

Saw some early this year near Lancaster on the road from Ingleton.
Don't know if they are just preserved or still working though.

Thornaby, the station with a host of architectural features, far to many for its size and the line it served, sadly never made a listed building.

Mr B please note the fine examples of serpent benches in the pic, they are carrying an unusual livery. Normally the serpents are black although i have seen some customised versions that look quite ferocious.

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
thornaby must have been built about the same time as tynemouth as the metalwork is very similar
Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
The serpent benches were painted the same cream colour at Stockton station when the roof was demolished - see my photo

Re "Get Carter" I always thought it was done at Dawdon Blast but I've been told it was actually Blackhall Colliery.
According to Ken Hoole's book "Railway Stations Of The North East" Thornaby was rebuilt and opened in 1882 at a cost of £11,482 and was renamed from "SOUTH STOCKTON" to Thornaby 10 years later. I seem to remember reading that Ken got the tile map when it was demolished but no idea where it went to.

You're welcome 52D. I have no idea where the one in the NRM came from- do you? Also I would imagine Sunderland station must have had one but I was 6 when it was demolished so again I can't remember.

Look at page 3 of this post there is as much info on the tiled maps as i can find tiled-maps-of-the-ner-t1282.html
The NRM map is originally from Kings Cross

Mind you I have been told there was an NER pattern Zero post or Milepost (can't remember which) at Kings Cross between the buffers?
