It only remains for someone to name their racehorse 'Tornado' and it will be an appropriate choice for an LNER Pacific...It's been said that the name isn't suitable for a Peppercorn A1 as it's not historically a name that would have been used -

I just hope that those doing the research into building one will read some 1957 'Trains Illustrated' articles by "Toram Beg" who gives an insight into what they were like to drive - and his conclusions are anything but rosy.
He talks of the P2s getting through a hundredweight (50kg) of coal per mile pulling 500 tons between Edinburgh and Aberdeen, compared to a Pacific with 450 tons trailing using 45lbs (about 20kg) per mile on the same route.
Lets hope the owners have very deep pockets and a large supply of decent coal.

With respect, I wonder if, given the free steaming nature of the Diagram 118a boiler (as on Tornado), which will be reportedly used again - if this same figure can be applied to a new P2 in this way? Hmmmm, I suppose it's how you drive the loco, Torem Beg's comment 50 kg, is probably normal, But, it's in normal service, with I believe quite a few stops and a nice twisty route, now if it's only working one or two days a week and cruising along todays track, you'll probably see the 50kg drop to about 20kg.
Pesonally, the P2's would have been much better suited to the KX- Newcastke route, would have been so easy to hang 18 coaches on the back of one of them, and watched it fly to Potters Bar,------ Hill? what Hill????

Yes, good points there - and as an original Tornado covenantor I am highly likely to subscribe to a P2 as well, just so that I can see what they really look like 'in the flesh'. So I am not trying to pour cold water on the project, just being realistic.
I agree that a P2 and 18 coaches would have been great between KX and Newcastle, but I suppose they would have had the same problem as I gather they sometimes did during WW2, (although for obvious reasons it is hard to find much information on the details) with the locomotive having to start the train from inside Gasworks tunnel?

Thats true LNER Fan 60008 you can't really argue about that it's just that i thought that if the locomotive wasn't named it would create an 'air of mystique' surrounding the locomotive with the 'strange wheel arrangement' especially amongst the national press and the wider public?.

But just use the same cylinders and valve gear for both variants? In which case, would it be Lentz and poppet valves, or Walschaerts and piston valves? If the former, then the Bugatti nose version will be a "replica" of something that never was .If the latter, then we should be looking for a name to suit a modern Earl Marischal as opposed to CotN.
