If Darlington still had its own shade of green after the war, the Hornby model looks quite correct going solely off photos. The Doncaster and Darlington greens are seen below (D49 in Darlington green).

Hi all,

Can I have clarification on liveries then? My reading of the L1 page on this site indicates that only 9000 was built before 1948, and so the subsequent locomotives in the class would have carried British Railways on the tank sides rather than LNER.

Thanks
James

James

No. The first four members of the class carried LNER lettering as Nos. 9000-03.

9000 was the prototype, which Hornby have stated they will not be producing due to the number of "prototype" variations.

E9004-12, 69013-5 (all later renumbered as 67701-16) and 67717-22 were in green with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tanks.

67723-30 appeared in lined out black.

All the above were railway-built locos.

The contractor-built locos (67731 onwards) with the modified 'drop' in the running plate ahead of the cylinders appeared only in BR lined black.

Hello
Photographic evidence suggests that there were always small variations in livery, depending on which works did the painting. L-1 No 9000, the prototype, was built at Doncaster, and had black buffer shanks and a red buffer beam, bordered in black and white. The production series engines built at Darlington had red buffer shanks and red buffer beam. This applies for black engines as well: Doncaster painted the buffer shanks black, Darlington's were red. Very few engines, if any, from whatever works, had Black buffer beams. Hope this helps.
Forward!
John

One wonders if contributors read earlier posts before bursting into print!

Silverfox - Indeed! :)

Paul - Many thanks for that. Perhaps this information should be added to the L1 page?

It is so tempting and pleasing on the eye. They are just too out of my era, a real shame.

A certain Nick Campling  penned an article about the L1s for Modellers' Back Track Volume 3 No 3. There's a colour photo that includes 9000 on which the black buffer shanks and red buffer beam are visible, as well as two more monochrome photos. Apart from a general summary of the class and some further photos, there's a 4mm scale drawing and a long list of the variations between the prototype, the Darlington and the contractor (North British Loco and Robert Stephens & Hawthorn) -built production locos.

Do you know I had forgotten about that! I now have the original drawing in front of me - it was originally drawn for the ECJM and later ABS kit box in 1976.

Can't help wondering.......did he draw it specifically for the box, or did the kit makers adopt it, with or without his consent?

Graeme

The drawing was produced for the kit. I was one of the original team who produced the kit! I have had drawings used by producers without permission - it is not unusual! I think you have one such exmple on your bench somewhere?

 I obviously didn't read the thread with sufficient care whilst sufficiently wide awake. I should have seen that you had posted the remark about the origin of the drawing yourself.

I'll pull my socks up in future Nick
