Hornby L1 arrived ?

Just Been trawling through E-Bay, and came across this! the New Hornby L1 2-6-4T, must be a early release, Hattons have'nt even got it.

They look very good in the photos that I have seen. Cant wait for the BR black version - although with the Cravens DMU and the late crest ROD 2-8-0, I am in danger of going bankrupt.

They are a cracking looking little loco, just a q on the livery should the buffer shanks be Black? I realise that it is a post war livery so I accept I may be wrong....

Black buffers shanks do look good though. I think hornby has done a classy job on these as they really look V1 dereived like the real ones.

Looking at the photo in Yeadon Vol 16, p52, of 9001 ex-works from Darlington in early 1948, it does appear that the buffer guides and buffer beam should all be in black, lined white.

Hattons are showing it as "more than 10 in stock" for the LNER DCC ready/fitted livery on the ehattons site - other versions still advance order. Still, can't be as bad as the Bachmann Peppercorn which has changed dates more times than a .....

Concerning L1 buffer shanks on apple green locos, those on 9002 were red. Also 67722. Many B1's also had shanks in red instead of the usual black. Some but not all Peppercorn Pacifics reverted to black. 60125's were red.

Yeadon does note in the caption to the photo of 9001 that the 29 locos built by Darlington that entered traffic between 22nd January and 6th August 1948 came out in two livery styles and four different numbering series.

The photos of E9012, E9014, and 67717 all show red buffer shanks and beams (with lining), whilst the photo of 9000 (bunker end) on p.61 has black buffer shanks and bases (no lining) but red buffer beam (with lining).

There is a side-on colour photograph of 67713 with BRITISH RAILWAYS on tank side, LNER green and clearly the buffer shanks are red. The same livery is applied to 61665 Leicester City.

Although in BR apple green the buffers look like they are painted red.

I have just collected mine and checked the livery. 9000 was painted Green with Black buffer shanks and Shaded No and NE only. 9001-3 were in Green with Yellow Gill Sans numbers and LNER and Red buffer shanks, so Hornby have it quite correctly finished. Now the shade of Green - well who really knows?

Yes it is a bit on the big size! At least the newer forum software handles oversized images in a more sensible way - the old version would have stretched all the text out to match.

I would recommend in future you use a much smaller version. I a large image is necessary for detail (eg. a trackplan) then to post a URL rather than an image tag.
