I wonder if anyone has access to WTTs which would give me an idea of the year when Church Trains ceased running from Riccarton Junction to Hawick and Newcastleton on alternate Sundays. I've seen an LNER Church Train Voucher, so they must have run before WW2.
I've a 1947 WTT and there's no sign of the trains, but recently at Newcastleton I spoke to a local who recalled, "It was only the women who went to the kirk - the men went for a drink!" (A little massaging of the bona fide Traveller law for Scotland, perhaps?)
And then, intriguingly she went on, "When the trains stopped the women transferred their lines to Saughtree Church and walked along the railway to Saughtree."
Thanks for any help,
Bruce
