LNER Class B1
I am about to start building a Gauge 1 live steam LNER Class B1. I have acquired a number of drawings over the years, some of which are of questionable accuracy and will use the NB Loco General Arrangement one for most of my work. The prototype will be VISCOUNT RIDLEY No 1241/61241. At present I am stuck for photos of this loco - can any subscribers please help me with either photos or direct me to where I may seek some?
Many thanks
Dixie

Re: LNER Class B1
I think there is a photo of 61241 in Steam Railway magazine number 130-feb 1991.
Unfortunately I dont know what the quality is like as all my magazines are boxed up ready for a house move.

Re: LNER Class B1
There is a good l/h side view of 61243 in Yeadons volume 6 .p33
I wouldn't think there would be much difference to 61241 as ther came into traffic only 20 odd days apart.

I've gone right through Pete Swinger's Power of the B1s, OPC but no photos of this particular loco - one or two of 'sisters?' with male names from the same batch are the closest. In the 1970s, Model Railways did an 'in profile' in-depth article on the B1s - drawing to 7mm scale, sketches, photos, details etc. I'll try and dig it out.

Gooooooogling the number doesn't turn up anything except about 10 million adverts for Bachmann's approximation.

The drawing in RM is based on a Roche drawing and has significant errors.65447 wrote:I've gone right through Pete Swinger's Power of the B1s, OPC but no photos of this particular loco - one or two of 'sisters?' with male names from the same batch are the closest. Bill, did your mean RM or MR? There was an Ian Beattie drawing in RM, and I didn't even consider mentioning the Roche drawing in the Ian Allan 'Historic Loco Drawings'...Bill Bedford wrote:The drawing in RM is based on a Roche drawing and has significant errors.65447 wrote:In the 1970s, Model Railways did an 'in profile' in-depth article on the B1s - drawing to 7mm scale, sketches, photos, details etc. I'll try and dig it out.

There's also the Isinglass of the B1 which is available in 10mm if you find the GA lacking in any detail.
Haven't got any pictures of that loco though.

I have just registered today although I have regularly browsed the forum for some time. So a very belated response to your post of August 2010. I expect that, by now, you have already built your LNER B1.
I had decided to scan some old photos into my computer and came across one taken of 61241 Viscount Ridley in 1960 at Carlisle Canal shed. I hadn't recalled seeing a photo of that B1 online before so "Googled" it and came across your post.
I lived in Manchester but, with a couple of schoolfriends, sometimes used to go on day excursions being run to Carlisle for the Races. We didn't go to the Races of course but did the rounds of Kingmoor, Canal and Upperby.
It appears that 61241 had brought in a Chronicle Race excursion from Newcastle. I can only think that it was during the summer holidays but I don't know the date - my old records have long since disapperared.
Too late to help you perhaps but thought I'd at least post a photo of 61241 for posterity, even if poor quality Brownie B&W.
Regards

Re: LNER Class B1
Thank you for your interest. I would very much welcome a copy of the photo. Could you possibly email me one?
My model is progressing slowly and should be ready for steaming by the end of the month. This will be without any of the loco platework or cab - I am just anxious to see that the thing works!
