Neil,
67635 at Doncaster in 1959 - I suspect the Pullman will be the Hull Portion of the Yorkshire Pullman.

Only from vague memory of other possibly-similar photograph(s), but might 63928 be at Grantham?

Re: Various Gresley Designed Locomotives
I don't think I would class either the A8 or D16 as Gresley designs.

I suppose it depends on points of view. If Raven never designed his loco as a 4-6-2T, then the rebuild from 4-4-2T must really be credited to Gresley. Otherwise we cannot credit the A2/2 to Thompson.....!don't think I would class either the A8 or D16 as Gresley designs.

Re: Various Gresley Designed Locomotives
Well, I dunno about 'Get out of that one' Coachman, because I was tempted last night to say something very much along the same lines as Bill Bedford. The A8 was a Gresley rebuild of a Raven N.E. design as you say, but, surely, therefore, it was a Raven design.Even more so the D16 was a Gresley rebuild of Holden's famous Great Eastern 'Claud Hamilton' class, but, Gresley's was the last in a long series of Great Eastern developments and rebuilds, there is no way the 'Claud Hamilton' and its developments can be called a Gresley design.
But having said that:- all the references give the N2 as a Gresley design - but surely it's a development, not a rebuild but a development of Ivatt's N1. So who designed Gresley's N2 ?
I'll bet you can drive a coach and horses through that one, Coachman ?

Re: Various Gresley Designed Locomotives
Both Darlington and Stratford drawing offices were relatively independent especially when it came to updating their own designs. While Gresley would have had to approve the designs most of the work would have been done at the two works using mainly component already to hand. Indeed Stratford had a tradition of putting bigger boilers into Claud frames that long pre-dated Gresley's appointment as CME.coachmann wrote:Bill Bedford said :I suppose it depends on points of view. Re: Various Gresley Designed Locomotives
As we know, railway history is full of who designed this or that when it often came down to the head-mans signature. But there were instances when it went beyond that, like the LMS Royal Scots being referred to by LMS management as 'Improved Castle Class' (Collett Scot???) and the Black Fives being called 'Improved Prince of Wales class' (Beames Black 5???). The Stanier 0-4-4T is probably one of the dafter ones.

Well, no major railway was going to admit that they had to resort to outside contractor to design their flagship passenger express locos.coachmann wrote:As we know, railway history is full of who designed this or that when it often came down to the head-mans signature.
