Hornsea to Hull route

Post by Jammy »

Just started a preservation group for the Hornsea to Hull route, you can follow us or join on facebook and on the website.
You can shed doubt, but it is actually possible. Start small, work up funds to demolish the houses on the route, then re-establish in Hornsea.
Got a good amount of support already, and I'm doing a Questionnaire on Friday to see the response from the residents of Hornsea.

Is there any precedent for a preservation group persuading owners or residents to sell up, move out and see their properties demolished? Even with full statutory compulsory purchase powers and national government behind it the Highways agency can have a heck of a job dislodging certain "stick in the mud" characters from homes that are in the way. I cannot see that you have any "trump card" to play even if the railway WAS "there first", as the right of way was surrendered when the line was closed, lifted and the land sold. Our Beeching era and later governments and BR boards were too short sighted, or too afraid of blighting the value of the ex-railway land, to create a "right to buy back and reconstruct" in sales agreements, even in the national strategic interest, let alone on behalf of preservationists.

Well the East Riding Council own the line now, as I learnt by emailing the Transpennine trail society. Obviously there are houses in the way, and chances are your right there will be one stubborn person. But I'm fairly certain and hopeful that as the town really want this railway back, anyone living in the way of this dream might not be so stubborn with town pressure. I've heard there's a town councillor that would side with me (don't know who it is yet though and they don't know about my preservation plans), and the mayor of Hornsea is also behind the idea of bringing the railway back if not that but connect it with Beverley instead. But yes, I am hoping to find out results of what the entire town thinks on Friday in my questionnaire, and I will eventually of course talk to the people who live in the houses in the way of the line.

On a further note of course, I do find it ironic of me that I'm basing all my operations in Hornsea to bring the line back but yet the line wont even reach Hornsea for a long while even after the line is reconstructed. I really should do Questionnaires in all the villages where the old stations are.

Where would you terminate the Hull end of the line as the swing bridge over the river at Wilmington has gone?

Rather than tackle the old line in Hull which would be very costly I've decided for the line to divert a bit more South West to join the Beverley line as all that will be in the way is countryside. Rather than tackle a developed city. As I know railway crossings and bridges would be an issue.
