Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Bryan, Redcar Central was single platform untill the mid 1930's then to ease race and bank holliday days a second platform was built, it was only used on these days, also at the same time West Dyke crossing box was built, if you study the photos you'll see the original box next to the goods shed (later, 1970's to become the carpet warehouse) , this was in later years a florrists and a football pools office. Behind the station canopy can be seen the original 2 road engine shed and was the only watering point for locos, it was removed later, meaning no refills between Middlesbrough and Saltburn. the engine shed is now shared between carpet and double glazing firms. Right up untill the 1980's both up and down passenger traffic used the train shed. Then the new booking office was built on platform 2, re-numbered to platform 1, around the same time a new platform 2 was added to cope with Saltburn bound trains. whilst this was going on the station buildings and train shed was converted into a small buisness centre. The line to the outside of the train shed was used for up and down freight and through excursions to Saltburn.

I wonder if, in a more enlightened future, the train shed will ever be reinstated for railway use? Incidentally, I have never understood how they were able to get away with demolishing the train shed at Saltburn?

Re: Darlington Saltburn branch
Have you an exact date mr B? I'm sure it was still there when I left Redcar to join the RAF in '58. Coming from Lumley Rd to Sacred Heart & then to catch a United 72 to St. Mary's in the Boro it was a must to cross that bridge as a train went under. Just wish I'd paid more attention to types in those days. Thanks for the trip down memory lane anyway.mr B wrote:Redcar Central once again ,,, Redcar Races bailing out after a bank holiday meeting in the early 1950's the massive crowds flock over the footbridge on west dyke crossing, the bridge had to be taken down in the mid 50's because it be came unsafe.

V2 60833 at Redcar Central taken from the footbridge over west dyke crossing circa 1961. The short bay just to the right of the front buffer was the hourse box sidding, and outside cylinder locos had a banning order after a Q6 removed the platform edge.

Only just discovered this topic as MrB's woken it up. I'd post some photos if I could learn how to compress'em - more lack of patience and time than skill I think - and hope.
However, the photos are from an Ian Allan pub called 'Teesside Railways - a View from the Past' - I wonder if anybody has a copy ?

well Bryan as long as you enjoy sitting back, there is still a plee for others photos on the Saltburn branch, Hyperion feel free to submit your photo's, mind you thank those concerned-copyright stuff, when working in the cinema I got stick from the performing right's for playing some records and never listed them, the guy from the local record shop was using his comp ticket-he loaned the weeks records (the shops add was with Pearl & Dean) and he'd noticed I'd played something I should'nt have !
