Old Timetables

Apart from the off chance of finding an old timetable in a second hand bookshop, is there another, more reliable, source? I'm interested in the BR (LNER) timetables of the mid to late 1950s. Does the NRM at York, for example, sell reprints? (If not, perhaps there is a market there).

Suggest you try the Railwayana auctions.I have recently purchased the 1953 LNER summer timetable and 2 Bradshaws-1947 and 1937(a reprint) at Solent Auctions.

If you are looking for a specific timetable, and you can get to the National Archives at Kew, they have a comprehensive selection of BR (ER) WTT's in the RAIL 909 series. A fair number of former BR (NE) WTT's are held at the Ken Hoole Study Centre at Darlington.

OK, in the absence of timetables, can anyone enlighten me as to the timings of the Departures ex Kings Cross of the ECML expresses in the period in question? I seem to remember that The Flying Scotsman left at 10 am, The Northumbrian at 1 pm and The Heart of Midlothian at 2 pm - what about The Fair Maid of Perth and The Talisman?

According to the summer 1958 timetable the deparature times from King's Cross of various named expresses was as follows:

Flying Scotsman 10 am
Talisman 4 pm (Mon to Fri)
Heart of Midlothian 1 pm
Fair Maid 7.50 am
Northumbrian 12.30 pm

If it's the London area you're interested in don't forget the London Transport local timetable booklets. They included both bus and train times and can often be found on sales stands at bus rallies.
